My boyfriend won't shut up about this movie, it does look pretty exciting, I'm hoping my town's crappy movie theater gets it in so we can see it on the big screen!

Looks good. For awhile, I thought this was a high tech CGI job with no real people. Nice to see I was wrong. It kind of has a Lord of the Rings mixed with Kingdom of Heaven. Sure looks better than the older version of 300.

it's based on the historic battle of thermopaly(sp). 300 spartans against 1 million soldiers and they almost won.

While the Persian navy was suffering formidable losses at sea due to a terrible storm and the subsequent attack of the Athenian navy, Xerxes ordered his land troops forward to attack the Spartan's defense of the Hot Gates at Thermopylae. For the first two days of the battle at Thermopylae, the Persians were badly defeated by the steadfast Spartan-led troops, but on the third day, Xerxes' imperial guard found access to a previously undiscovered pass (revealed to them by a turn-coat Greek) that allowed them to outflank Leonidas' guard. Xerxes ordered yet another frontal attack—of the same caliber that had been defeated the previous two days—but this time, he also commanded a second attack from the rear mountain pass. Leonidas and his Spartans were defeated after two glorious days of battle, and Xerxes' troops eventually advanced into Southern Greece, despite the heavy losses dealt by the 300 Spartans.

I always heard that the 300 soldiers were in a mountain pass and that the persians were slaughtered as they entered the pass because they could only march in a few at a time, and clogged up the pass with war elephants and more common mounts.

That's the reasons the Spartans almost won. they were smart about where they actually fought and knew that this place would only allow a certain number of persians through. a number small enough that with the great combat skill of the spartans the persians could easily be held off. The Spartans did not go to this battle to win the war. they went to hold of the persian attack basically and knew that eventually they would be defeated. the spartans actually had allies in this battel, but on the last day knowing they were about to be defeated by a frontal and rear attack from the Persians the Spartans sent their allies home and they fought the final battle themselves with a few allies who refused to leave. they believe the real numbers of the battle (no one know for sure) were more like five thousand Greeks and Two and a half million Persians. Over a quarter million of the Persian troops were actually Greeks who believed the the Persians would win anyways, so they joined the Persian side after a bribe that they would be part of the Persian empire.

the elephants were not a historical fact. this movie is based on the (frank miller is it?) Graphic Novel, which is a work of fiction. it is LOOSELY based on a historical event.

and here I was thinking 300 must be the number of times they dropped the F bomb in the first fifteen minutes of "The Departed".
