this is not a rant about *****.
a new ***** just opened by my house and I was thinking about getting a job there so i could take better care of the fish because i do know a little something about caring for fish more than the avg person you could say
but i was wanting input from you guys to see what you thought about this idea because i have seen alot of threads here that say like ughh stupid ***** and their ill treatment of fish so i was gonna try to do my part to help the fish and take a little of petcos money at the same time
good idea? or bad one?

Unless you are the aquatics manager, you may find yourself more frustrated over your inability to do the right thing with the animals.
While the appearance of fish in any ***** varies by location, you'll find that just as in any retail operation, you do what the manager tells you.

I was thinking that also. It's a lose lose. Customers just told you they had a 30 and they want to put 6 tangs in it. You can "advise" all day lond, but in the end your gonna wanna be ringing some necks. If your people skills and patience are optimal then go for it, but otherwise, I wouldn't.

I worked for a ***** in college mainly for bar money.
I knew a ton about fish and even more about reptiles having bred many species of snakes.
I hated it, and it was the most depressing thing to see. The other people who work there and generally people who like animals, but have no clue how to care for anything besides dogs and cats.
You see terrible things working there. All the animals kept in bacj because they're sick, but never get attention. They just sit there suffering, and you can do little about it. Even if you attend each one, there's no way of knowing that your co-workers are doing anything to help on the days you're not working. I could go on forever, but I won't.
I know this site has plenty of ***** bashing threads, but it is literally the worst retailer I've ever known, even worse than Best Buy.
Plus, if your motivation to work there is to guide customers to your LFS instead, I don't think you'll be around long.

You need a job. (assumption)
They have an opening.
Give it a try.
If you can help the animals, do so.
If not, quit.

Its one thing when its your car or a buddies car . But when you cant do it the fun way then it looses its excitment.
so what your saying is you should get a job doing something you dont like
, i have to disagree, i am a ford tech and any time not spent staring at the fish tank i work on the camaro (www.fquick.com/dangalla). if you like something enough there is no reason why you should not do it to make money
give it a try, why not

I think that whay he's saying is that when you rely on what you love to do to feed your family, it becomes a monster when it lets you down. You begin to hate what you once loved. Being a flat rate Ford tech you can understand this. When the shop is dead so is your paycheck. Or if a car beats you up, it gets personal.

There is certainly a bit of truth to this.
Back when I was in high school and college, I loved computers. I didn't even mess with fish tanks... well I had a 10 gallon fw tank, but that's it.
Then I got a job as a network administrator and ultimately what I'm doing now, IT director. It's not that I hate computers, I have an elaborate network system at my house and servers with terabytes of storage on them, the whole house wired for Cat5, etc, so I'm still "above average" when it comes to home networks. At the same time however, I've lost the thrill of experimentation and diagnosis. All I want now is for my home systems to "just work." Instead of being excited and challenge to fix something when it breaks, now I just get irritated.
I know another member on here mentioned that that it's wrong to think that you shoudldn't get a job doing something you like, I disagree with that as well (by that I mean that you CAN and SHOULD get a job doing something you like), but you do lose a bit of the fun and passion that you put into it with a hobby when you do it professionally.
To this topic.. working in a pet store to try to save the animals might be worse for you than doing nothing. If you have that level of passion for the well being of the animals, you might be shocked to see the things that go on, especially in a chain store. What will be more disheartening is how little you can do about it, or worse, being forced to participate in it. Ultimately, you won't work there for long.

i worked as the aquatics guy and the way they do things and the equipment you are given still makes it almost impossible....i was told by the head aquatics guy over the region that the goal is to move them in and out and because fish loss was so high a bare minimum of utilities would be used and that eventually aquatic departments will be either all fresh water or that saltwater fish were going to be really high...they will not use QT for fish because of cost reasons and not having personel to properly care for them....so in short i was told that my job would basically to feed, stock and sell....period....none of the care you would put into your home tank...such as lighting, tank size demands, calcium demands...nothing
