It depends on how much you like. If you wanna have a deep sandbed, which is more benefitial IMO, then you are looking at 3-4 inches deep. I would try 35-40lb first and see how it looks.

There is a formula to calculate the amount of sand needed, but it is dependent on the dimensions of the tank. What are those?

sorry it took so long work calls
L= 31.5
W= 13.75
H= 18
now would it be any good to go half agaonite and half LS?

Bruzer, did you say WORK came before your fish tank?
The calculation on those deminsions would be 97 lbs of ls for a 3.5" deep sb.
Did you faint yet? This is calculated on an empty tank, no lr, etc.
I would love to see ppl's faces with those calculations.

I think the 1lb per gal sounds pretty good.

I think it's better to use inches to measure LS, but when you are at the LFS, it bases on pound. Yah, go with about 1lb per gallon.

Hi Bruzer,
I have a 30 gallon also. I bought 30lbs of sand and it gives me about 1- 2 inches of sandbed. Depending on where the bloody damsels have moved it :) And that is with no LR
