340 gallon tank

I will be buying a 340 gallon aquarium in 2 months. I have been wracking my brain for a few weeks now about what type of fish will occupy the tank. I know that I definitely want a yellow tang, but am not sure what else I can put in there with him. I would love to have a trigger fish and a school of some other type of smaller fish (5-6 in. max). Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of schooling fish I can keep with a tang and a humu humu trigger. Can the tang and the trigger live in the same tank? The tanks dimmensions are 130x24x25. Thanks.

First off, establish what kind of tank you want...Fish Only? Reef?
That will identify the types of fish you can keep.
Then, with that size tank, there are a lot of options.

You could try having a school of yellow tangs. Thats what I'm planning on doing soon. Also, triggers have been reported to scratch acrylic tanks as they get larger, something to consider if your tanks acrylic.

The tank is glass, so scratching shouldn't be a problem. A school of yellow tangs would be cool, but I thought they would fight if kept together.

Introduced all at once, similar size, and an odd number, and they can form a school. They school in the wild, I'm looking at 5 for a 480 I should have up and running by christmas.

Would 5 fit comfortably in a 340 gallon though? I want a school of fish, but I also want one or two other fish. I may be borderline overstocking the tank with 5 tangs, a trigger and one other fish (I like the dogface puffer, but not sure of the compatibility)

I am not that experienced in this matter but I was looking at SWF.com today and noticed that a Black & White Heniochus looks like a stunning fish. Its a type of butterflyfish and it says they are a schooling fish as well. Again I have no experience I just personally would think a school of these guys would look awesome.

I have a yellow tang a huma-huma and a niger. They are all about 4-5 inches and they get along just fine. The yellow tang and the niger are friends they will often share the same food with each other. They have all been together for over a year.

Thanks everyone, these are all great suggestions, but...
I want a school of fish (at least 6) in addition to a yellow tang and a trigger. So far suggestions have come in for a a school of yellow tangs or Black & White Heniochus or niger triggers. Believe me I would love to have a school of any one of these but IMO they all get too big too comfortably fit in my 340. Can anyone suggest a fish that will school, will stay relatively small and will get along with a Yellow Tang and a Humu Picasso Triggerfish. Thanks, keep the ideas coming. Also, I just ordered The Conscientious Marine Aquarist, can anyone recommend other books for new hobbyists. Right now I just have a 10 gallon saltwater tank with a tomotoe clown and a blue damsilfish. I am running, I think its called the berlin method for filtration (deep sand bed, lots of live rock). The tank has been up and running for over a year with no problems. I plan on using the same method when I get my 340 gallon.

I don't know about trigger compatibility, but Green Chromis will school nicely, as will Firefish, although they are jumpers. They should be Ok with the Yellow Tangs, and stay small. I believe around 3 inches is max size.

I seen a tank on a movie that looked to be about 240 gallons with over 20 yellow tangs. It looked cool but I don't know if this is possible or just a movie. Here is the best pic I could capture.

Theres ALOT of movies out, especially asian films, that have huge aquariums filled with 3-4 dozen yellow tangs. I've always wondered about that. Some fish stores keep a dozen or two in 55 gallons, and in the small amount of time I watched, I never seen any aggression. ???

Schooling or shoaling fish.
I really like Anthias'. Great colors, I love the body shape and generally easy to feed. Check them out. I dont know if they really are a schooling fish, but I always see lots of them together.

If I had a display that large and intended to keep it fish only...then I'd consider 3 or 5 yellow tangs and an assortment of others. Just talking out loud...but with my yellow tangs I'd consider a niger trigger and possibly a hippo tang...possibly even a humahuma....but I'd try to avoid smaller fish that may become snacks and I'd insure that the filtration could handle the load placed on it. Just a dream here...but best of luck with yours...keep us posted on how it developes. It sounds like a very nice sized display....
