i bought a retro 47" 8x 54 t5 HO, how far off the fish tank would i need to have it? the tank is a 75 gallon.

The closer the better I think, but most seem to have them about 3 to 4 inch.
At least mine are someplace between 3 to 4. I got a Nova Extreme Pro and the brackets that came with it hold them about there.

i have an almost all glass top and i had it just sitting on it and on to see what it would look like, and it got hot enough to separate the glass from the plastic hinge. i turned it off and took it off the top and the glass and hinge stuck back together, so as close as i can get it. 3-4 inches does sound good... thanks a lot
You're most likely going to want to get rid of the glass tops to increase the air circulation in the tank. You'll get more evaporation, but its better for the tank. I have a TEK 6x54 watt fixture on my 75. The mounting legs put the unit about 5-6 inches above the surface of the water.
