Cute little bugger my a@@. It's funny I came to work this morning to find this topic. I got nailed last night. A turbo snail knocked off one of my frags, and it fell back under some liverock. As my family watched on, and with water up to my armpit, I was reaching back behind and under the LR. WHAM!!!!!!!!!! I didn't even know I had one. I haven't noticed any missing tankmates just my finger.
Let's just say I got even!!!!!!!!

Yeah definitely don't try and tickle its chin if you think it is cute.
Claw how is your finger? did he get you good?
I have heard horror stories. Needless to say I was careful removing his rock from the tank when I finally saw him.

I looked it up - it's a stomatapod or shrimp. Found an article where one in England actually broke the glass of the aquarium it was in. Seems like a pretty nasty little creature!

It was no match for a 6'5" 230lb redneck though.
damn my finger still hurts though:mad:
I'd like to know if it was a smasher or a slicer, or how you're supposed to determine it.

I would say if it didn't cut you it must have been a smasher but that is really just a guess. I wouldn't want to be hit by one. you are the MAN!

Well I did it.. I got my mantis outt a the tank. I did the high salinity drip. I went through 4 big pices of Marshall lr that I assumed it was in. After two min dip, I let the lr hang outta the water. I got upset b/c nothing came out. Then I decided to dip a nice piece of brazilian rock that had two hole. As I go in to grab the rock (with my gloves on of course.. no missing thumbs for me:D ) I see it move and I scream and throw the rock in the bucket on the floor. My son takes the spoon to poke the rock and it clicks again.. he jumps and drops the spoon..
Now it's on.. we take the bucket outside and decide that we have to poke him out. After 4 mins, it still doesn't come out.. We don't know what to do.. my husband said fine, I have to mow the lawn, leave him in the sun to cook, fine by me, cause I'm not going to loose a finger over it...
Come back 15 mins later and I see his back through the hole in the lr. I convince my husband to please crack open one of my favorite, fully correlined rock to get him out.. We crack the rock into 3 pieces and he finally falls out.. DEAD... Now I feel like crap all weekend. I'm happy he's out of my tank but I'm sad that I couldn't get him to give up alive..

I know forgiveness is the key, but I swear that I'm going to acid dip every mantis I see for the next 100 years........
Don't feel bad, you just saved a fish from being sliced in half, or a snail from being bludgeoned to death. It's the way of the world...the bigger predator is higher on the food chain, and that's you. I would feel bad about the LR though. And..after hearing your story it makes me want to acid dip more of them to seek revenge for your losses.;)
Just kidding... I haven't gone over the edge yet, and hey my finger is almost feeling better. It must be those snoopy band aids.
