i dont want a reef tank but would like something in my tank. Is there anything that would work with 40 watt 48 inch 50/50 bulb?

I have had this same light on one of my tanks
for about 6 months, and i have several mushrooms
and a large rock of polyps and everything,is doin
great.

One 40 watt bulb over a 75 gallon tank is just almost bright enough for your fish to see where they are going. This is not going to sustain any corals. You may have luck with feather dusters, urchins, starfish, shrimps, crabs and such. These are all beautiful creatures that do not require light. I wouldn't waste my money on corals though...more than likely they will just die in a few weeks or months.

If you think that the 40wt is bright get some real light on there and it will definately make you thik twice. There are nice power compact setups that sit on the top of your tank. I suggest you do a little research.

Scott, you make me giggle you sound so much like me when I started out...FOWLR was my goal too but soon enough those soft corals started gaining my attention and it's just grown from there. If I were you I'd get the light situation under control first, spend your money there right now because then it will be oh a few mushrooms, then maybe a colt then before you know it your off on a reef system... :D

im just not sure on how to go about the lighting. I found a complete setup but it says all i have to do is mount it, well how and where do i mount it. I do not have a canopy, my strip light sits on top of my glass tops will the vhos come in a hood and just sit on top also? i am so confused on the light thing

wish I could help you out on the light thing but if you read my post on my bubble tip splitting you would know that according to what people on this bb say I don't have enough light to keep one alive much less have one healthy enough to split. Check the diy section on this board, there's lots of advise there about mounting lights etc. Also BlondeNaso has some pics posted in this forum and there is good one of the light canopy she built. Good luck :)
