I have a 400 watt MH bulb and ballast. Could I put that over a 30 gallon or would that be too much? There were three of them on a 30 inch deep tank.

I have 2 400 watts on my tall 125 for SPS. using a 400 on a 30 gallon is like shooting a horse with a missle.

you would just waste energy, power, and money because everything you buy will just burn and hurt the coral; thats a little to much light even for corals

get a 150watt...that might even be to much... but thats as high as I would go...if you want to run a tank like a big boy....buy a big one like us!

Run a tank like a big boy? I have a 265 sitting in my garage. I'm not staying in this house for too long though so I think I'm going to have to get rid of it. I've got it in the classifieds now.

the problem here would be the heat not the amount of light. matter a fact if you make this a sps tank they would be VERY happy with you. get a nice chiller and set the light high enough you could do it.
with that said if it was mine i would run a 250. if i already had the 400 i would use it if i had a good enough chiller. even with a 250 you would need a chiller.
are you running a sump? if not i would forget about the MH all together until you get a more advanced system

I run a hamilton lighting system.
Here is a picture
I run at 20k on all of my bulbs.
4, 55 watt PC's
2, 400 watt MH's
The lighting system cost me $500 used. Brand new price is over $3000 with everything.
I looooooved talking people done on used stuff!
(It was only 1 year old when i got it) works like new ..been using it for 2 years now... NEVER had a problem..and the light is amazing.
also i took these pictures for you, you owe me a frag

Also my electric bill for my house which is 2000 sq ft, with air on..computers...tvs...and a sea horse tank...is $235 a month.
Not bad.

also at this time im using XM bulbs...they are OUTSTANDING.
I've dropped my MH'S like 3 times (I moved..and i have butter fingers)...they dont break...im not suggesting you drop them to find out...but they are quality bulbs...
i highly suggest the 20k...the 14k/10k's ...i was not impressed with.

i run a 250 watt over my 30 gallon, and i think its perfect. i dont need a chiller either, but i have a 10 gallon sump so that helps a little. i agree that the 400 watt would be good for an sps, clam tank, but the 250 is perfect imo.

in no way is a 400 watt MH too much for a 30. but i wouldnt bother with it unless you were keeping sps and clams. depending on the natural heat of your house, you may not need a chiller. just use some fans, keep the halide up a little, and of course, as suggested, a sump will help. a 400 watt MH will actualy be GREAT. but if you jsut want lps, softies, and maybe half sps, a 250 would work well.

i have a 150 HQI over my 40 breeder, and am thinking of getting a 400, though i might settle for a 250

Thanks guys. I'm working on all other equipment and trying to get a good grasp on lights before I start dropping money into them. I have the 400's and thought I'd ask.
I've got another thread up on UV lights as well. I have some 32inch 96w UVs that I was wondering if that would be a little much for a 55. Or could I run two?

the UV debate could go one forever. IMO i would not bother running them at all.

Well if you like hard boiled eggs(your toasted fish/inverts) and if you like a Ton of pepper(your ashes of your corals) on your eggs then ya the lighting would be perfect!
Sorry i couldn't resist!
Not sure if any one will get it though i am horrible at telling jokes but oh well.
