I was wondering if a single 400 watt 10000k metal halide would be enough lighting to keep all corals and clams in a 46 gallon bow tank and also would 10000k or 20000k be better?
what are the dimensions of the tank?
it should be pleanty .... u can put some of the higher demanding corals such as SPS corals and clams directly under the light and then on the perimeters u can put some of the lower light needing corals such as LPS corals and polpys
im not sure about the look ud get with just using a 10K u might want to put a actinic PC retro along with it to get that bluer look.... maybe try a 14K 20K might be a lil too blue just depends on the look u want
i am not 100% sure on the dimensions because i am getting it from a friend but i beleive that it is roughly 36" long, 12" wide and probably 20" tall as for the look of the lights i just want the color temp light that will yield the fastest growth
I have two issues with that setup. One you probably will not have good coverage with just a single light, second your tank has a plastic center brace that might be weakened or melt from the heat of a 400w lamp.
I have a duel pendant setup on mine and like the coverage. HTH
i never thought of the center brace melting thanks for letting me know that would not have been good i think i will just go with a 2X250 setup instead thanks for your input.
I have a 46 bow with that plastic center brace. Ive been running dual satellites for the past month and havent had any melting issues at all. Lights are on for 8hrs a day.

Yea. The LED moonlight is right smack in the center just above the center brace. It helped to put the lighting on the stand tho. But there is still a shadow down the middle.

that is what i figured. i've been thinking about switching from pc to mh the past few weeks. seems like the pendants are the way to go. also easy to buy another pendant or two when a bigger tank makes an appearance
