I agree totally!!! Buyer beware and learn all that you can before you go to LFS. A 25 gallon is the same as a Nano tank. You can't keep much in one period.

If you are interested in keeping a PAIR, you might be able to get one out of this bunch. But you're going to have a dead fish on your hands very soon! I just witnessed this at my lfs today. There were 4 false percs in the same tank, and all way too close to one another in size. Three bullied up on one and killed it within 30 mins. I stood there in shock as the lfs worker didn't remove the fish being bullied. I'd keep the largest clown (most likely to be the female) and the next largest (most likely to be the breeding male), or the one that stays by her side (she may already have selected a mate). But I would take the remaining 8 back (or however many are still alive) as soon as your lfs opens in the morning! I would demand FULL store credit for these, as your lfs should have warned you not to keep them. They will almost surely not refund your money, but might give you full store credit.

a LFS i visited lately had around 10 clowns in one tank with a pile of anemones and they were getting along like buddies. they were all less than 1'' though. what is the deal with that? at what 'age' do they become teritorial?

As juveniles , they can be kept as many as 20+ providing a big enough tank . When become adults 2 can be kept in the same tank . Recently studies show tank bred clowns can have more and different species [except maroons] if put in the tank at the same time . But fish have personalities like people , some will work together and some won`t . But you can definetly have two , if not juveniles make sure one is smaller than the other or they will fight and possibly die . A 25 gal tank you can put 4-5 small fish .
