clowns, basslets, dartfish, gobies, wrasses, cardinals, damsels.. lots of choices.
pair of ocellaris clowns, blackcap basslet, pair of yellow tail blue damsels, carpenters flasher wrasse, and a pink spotted shrimp goby, would give you a nice colorful set-up.

I would agree with nicetry. I wouldnt put in any damsels thought JMO. They are nasty. But look cool though
YT blue damsels area among the better choices. While the fish as a whole get a bad rap, some are not bad little community fish. The YT blues are pretty and fairly docile.

7 fish is a lot for a 55g isn't it? Just curious because I have one as well.

They're all relatively small. With decent filtration and live rock , it should be fine. I like to see tanks with several small fish as opposed to a few large ones pacing back and forth trying to stay out of each other's way.
Heres what I have in mine.
2 ocellaris clowns
1 sixline wrasse
1 snowflake eel
1 coral beauty
Coral beauties are beautiful (obviously!) but they need to be added after the tank is at least 6 months old. Sixline wrasses are fun and relatively small. Ocellaris clowns are hardy and fairlly hilarious to watch. Mine steal food from my eel right in front of his face, brave little buggers (hopefully that won't get them into trouble in the future).
Like everyone else has said, avoid damsels.
