I would think you would want to consider why all the fish died!
It certainly wasn't from the nitrates. THe ammonia could be because of the dead fish.
Your pH is a possible concern...what is your alkalinity and calcium? What fish died and what were the symptoms?

Definitely need a complete review - ALL of your water parameters, filtration, recent tank maintenance, etc. Need a timeline.

This is a total shot in the dark, but could there have been some kind of contamination in the container you used to mix the new water, or on your skin when you were reaching in to the tank? I say this from experience, because I used to work in a science lab, and one day after work I came home and reached into my thriving tank to move something, and a few hours later all fish were dead. All I could ever figure out is that someone may have measured fungicide (or some other chemical) in the lab and I somehow got a small dusting on my skin which went into the tank and killed everything. Ever since that time, I am really careful to "scrub in" washing my hands and arms (no soap) before I reach in, because it was horrible and I still feel bad.

i really hope that wasnt the reason because i mixed 25 gallons of saltwater to do a double water change on my 90 reef and the 55(they are across the room from each other) any way the 90 seems to be fine all corals and fish are still alive im only having troble with one coral that doesnt open(has some sort of infection)
thanks for all the posts

ammonia is probably why they died(fish gasping) and why ph is so low. messy/big eaters are part of the problem, also why nitrates are up. what kind of media is in the canister and what did you clean when you cleaned it? no skimmer??? any flow in the tank other then the canister??
