55g halide...Heat?

I am setting up a new 55 for my gf and she wants to be able to keep anything(but I will be caring here...lol). She wants halides for sure, but My concern is heat. I am just wondering if there is a big difference in the heat output of 175w mh's and 250w's? 250w's would be really cool for the 55g so that's what I wanna do. Will I need a chiller? Or kinda just a trial thing? The lights will have to be at least 12" off the water.
Thanks,
Kyle

dual 175s or dual 250s either way your good, with the 250s you could invest in a small chiller although it isnt nessacary... add a 20 gal sump or fuge and if needed freeze bottles of h2o and place em in there

So sps, what would you do? I know you kept sps successfully w/175s? I would rather her not have to mess with a chiller.

i have a 55 with 2 15k 175 watt haildes in my canopy that sit about 8" off the water, the only thing that cools the tank are 2 4" fans(1 icecap,1 coralvue) and my temp stays at 79. with this set up you should be able to keep almost anything with the more light demanding corals torward the top.

Ok thanks andrew. I just wish I know the difference in heat between the two, because 250's only cost 25 bucks more.

Well I like the more light corals too, but she will have more lps and softies than sps prolly. The big thing is if she wanted to upgrade later. Oh and I love diy...lol. When you get a chance we need to chat.
Do you think a chiller would be necessary? My 250w's on my tank keep it around 82 and that's on my 110g

There are way too many factors that will decide if your going to need a chiller. If your going to have a open top tank (no canpoy) then I'd say its possible.
