I have done a lot of planning to come up with this design for my new 58 gallon reef:
- CSL MH/PC Retrofit Kit: 175 watt-10,000k-Ushio Bulb (Blueline eBallast)
2x 65 watt actinics.
- LifeReef CFL1 (Compact Berlin Sump) and Refugium
- 75 pounds of live rock and 60 pounds of live sand
Refractometer, Electric Ph monitor, Sailfert master test kit
Fish:
Flame Angel
Potter's Angel
Mystery Wrasse
Scooter Blenny
Orchid Dottyback
Dwarf Golden Moray
Corals:
1 Yellow Toadstool
1 Pineapple Brain
1 T. Maxima
1 Frag of Pulsing Xenia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not a complete coral list but my tank will not be covered in coral like most others.
I appreciate any advice - I haven't ordered anything yet.
Sounds like a well thought out plan....I've looked at the LifeReef products and the sump/refugium you have in mind looks like a good system. Several folks use them with great success. The only thing I'd suggest is the amount of sand you plan to use....I'd consider developing a 4"-6" DSB. Use this formula to figure how much sand you'd need for the depth sand bed you want...
(measurements are all in inches)
lengthxwidthxdesired depthx.0579=lbs sand
The combination of dwarf angels may not get along real well and both have been known to nip/munch corals....but I keep a coral beauty with the same type reputation with no problems.
Best of luck developing your system and keep us posted on your progress.:cool:
Is it possible to have a 2-3 inch dsb? i don't like the aesthetic looks of 6in of sand - I do plan on having lots in the rerfugium though. I already have a Flame Angel in my 30 - he does not nip on corals. The 30 will be set up while the 58 is to allow the reef to mature. The Flame and Potters will hopefully be added simultaniously after about 6 months.
Would people comment on a dsb in this tank? I don't like them aestheticly, but they seem great for filtration
