5g per 1inch

I have a question about the 5g for every inch of fish rule. Why is freshwater a gallon per inch. Is it because of the wastes that saltwaterfish excrete? I understand some fish need more gallons but why is it 5 for 1.

Their is less oxygen in saltwater, and the fish are usually more territorial.

I have always been told 2 gallons for every inch of fish....is this a bad rule...should I go with the 5 gallon rule?

once again...the issue boils down to the age ole' factor...IMO doing things right and wrong in sw is not clearly defined as black and white...there is always an exception to every rule so just go with the flow...I personally have learned by experience and by loosing money from that but...to me...that makes me myself a lot more aware of this hobby...

Thats a general rule but I go over that in FO. Wouldn't in a reef tank though. I have more around 1in to every 2.5-3 gallons. Really depends if the fish in the tank are aggressive or peaceful.
