6 day guarantee?????

Can some one explain how this works to me??? I bought three fish from SWF.com two of them died with in the first 48 hours. I sent them back because they should be covered by the guarantee. I have since found out through all of you helpful hobbyists that because I only have a 29 gal tank I should only introduce one new fish at a time. Makes sense to me.
Now, I get my guarantee e-mail back from SWF.com with a number to enter. It is very detailed and explains to me that the guarateed fish cannot be counted towards the minimum requirement. So in order to get my fish back I have to spend $79.00 in live products.
So how can I spend that much, plus get my fish back if I should only introduce one new fish at a time, and I should only put in one new fish about every two weeks? I already figure I will have to do two seperate orders to get back the two fish that died but what else can I buy to get my minimum requirement fulfilled. I don't have a reef light so corals are not an option.
Any suggestions

I bought about 7 fish from this website, and 6 died in the first week. The only think that survived was my pink and blue goby... I didnt do the garentee because i chose the shipping method of leaving it at the doorstep. I did however get handed the box from the ups or fedex dude. One was already dead, and all the rest died too....i never did get a reply back from SWF.com...i sent them an email and asked them if there was something wrong with the firefish i bought and why all 3 died, 2 within the first 2 days...

It's not good to hear about SWF because I had planned on getting fish here. But now I think I may just stick to LFS.
It stinks that they will not replace them on their own. I guess they make up their money for those if you have to spend another $79...not fair in my opinion.
Anyway, unfortunately the best way to avoid future problems is to introduce slowly..but MOST importantly..you should have a QT and keep new fish there for at least 3 weeks before adding them to your DT..
Just a thought..
Good luck

OK, I dont get it. SWF.com will only guarantee the fish if you acclimate them one at a time? Why do they have a minimum order of $79 ( i think) if you can only add one fish? I was also planning on buying fish here that I cant get at my LFS but I think I am just going to ask my LFS to order them or just buy the fish that are available. Thats not very good customer service since people obviously talk. Sorry to hear about your loss and thanks for the heads up.

The minimum order isn't $79 just to get free shipping the min is $70 otherwise you pay $30 to ship! Made me mad too - the sent me a dead fish I should just get that one sent to me.
Everyone else has been fine though
Good Luck

You can get inverts and such and add them at the same time. Or add a couple corals and a fish together. It isn't hard to spend $79 on one fish these days.

Yes, it isn't hard to spend the money..but wouldn't you agree that Hans should not have to.
They really should just replace what was lost if she preferred that. Why should she have to spend more money if he had not planned on it...that's just MO
sorry for the loss Hans.

The minimum amount is $79.00 worth of live products for free shipping. Then you pay $10.00 shipping and handling and a $5.00 gas charge because of increased gas prices. So if I spend $70.00 plus pay the $30.00 for delivery do I still pay $10.00 for S&H and $5.00 for gas charges???? :notsure:
I understand it is not hard to spend $79.00 on a fish, we did that when we placed the original order ( one of my mistakes since I should not have bought and introduced three new fish and one starfish at the same time) but I have to spend an additional $79.00 in order to replace the fish that died. I don't have a coral light yet so I can't spend my money on coral and we don't need $79.00 worth of more crabs and snails. I should only have 1 starfish for my size tank, so what do you do?
The 6 day gaurantee is worthless. I would not recommend buying fish from SWF.com if you have a small tank like mine (29 gallon). I need to get them from the local store I guess where I can buy 1 at a time and introduce slowly untill I get my tank well established.
I would be willing to buy some other items like a book or some test kits or some food but then I can't get the fish because it has to be live order. I guess because they ship differently you have to have all of your order a live order. At least this is my understanding of what I need to do. I have sent them an e-mail asking about this although I don't exactly expect a reply. Has anyone else had experience with this?

No, no, no. It's not acclimate them 1 at a time. Where did yo get that from? It's always a good idea to ADD 1 fish at a time to your display tank. Leave the rest in QT and introduce them a week or so later still 1 at a time. HTH

What do you mean by leave the rest in QT and add them one at a time to your display tank? Do you have two running salt water tanks? I thought putting them in quarantine meant putting them in the little plastic box that floats in the top but then they are still basically in your tank so that won't help your levels to not spike? :notsure:

If the little plastic box is in your tank you are only putting them in a little box. To put fish in QT (quarantene) is to put them into a SEPERATE salt water tank like 10-15 gal. with only a heater, and bio hang on back filter. You NEED to keep all new acquired fish in QT for 2 weeks or so to ensure they do not infect your display tank. QT is also where you can treat sick fish with hyposalinity (lower S.G.) with out having an adverse affect on the other inhabitants like inverts. etc. and or with copper. Least peferred method but effective. Thats a whole other subject. If you add to many fish to fast your bioload cannot keep up and your ammonia and trites will go crazy.

The fact of the matter is that the guarantee is plainly written and is something you should read and understand before you buy fish. Complaining about it does no good, It is unfortunate that your fish died but it does happen, at least there is a guarantee, most LFS do not guarantee fish at all, even if it dies in the bag on the way home.
A solution to your problem would be to find someone in your area that also has a saltwater tank and split an order with them so you can get your replacments without having to pay shipping or order more livestock.

I can completely understand everyone's frustrations, but I must say, we have been very happy with SWF and have ordered from them 4 times since starting our tanks in June of this year. We find ourselves falling in love with a new invert and we always need more snails, crabs, and such. We have unfortunately had a couple of losses in our orders and SWF has been very good to stand behind it. My first thought was how the heck are we ever going to find enough to equal another $79, but it adds up quick and the guarantee code has no expiration, so you can take time to let it add up. I have also seen some people selling their guarantee codes here in the classified section if you really don't think you can use it, maybe someone else can. I just don't want people to become unduly discouraged from ordering. One other idea, is there someone in your area that would be willing to split an order with you??? Just a thought but might be a way to work it out. Overall, I have to say, we have been very happy with SWF's livestock and have found there crabs and snails to be much hardier and of course, the prices are great too. They tend to be about half of what our LFS charges. So, even if we couldn't get something replaced (which hasn't happened yet), the money we have saved in our overall order more than makes up for it. Oops, almost forgot to mention that it is stated in the guarantee code that if you want the item shipped to you without an order you can do so and pay for shipping which I think may be $30 but not sure. HTH :happyfish
