I always hear about these deals, but have not found one untill now. A guy near me is moving and wants $1500 for a 100 gal tank, stand, refuge, sump, 60 + corals, 200 lbs of rock, 72" hamilton, geo calcium reactor, purple tang, blue tang, etc, etc, etc.
All I want is the corals and the blue tang. Any experience on what $ to offer in this situation?

really depends on the size and health of the corals and what they are. some corals go for more than others. I would say offer a price that you feel comfortable with spending and if he says no I want more or he might say OK here ya go. just depends on how bad you want them. also look at the local stores to see what some of the corals are going for your area maybe lower or higher than other places.

LOL cant be much more of Johnny on the spot to see two guys in Alaska with reef tanks.
if within Budget then just get all of it and par t out what you dont need.
I am sure the: lights, rocks, and reactor will NOT be hard to sell to make back your money.

Agree, just the calcium depending the brand could go for $400, corals let's say each for 20, just on corals would be 1200.
Try to take pics and offer him something on your range.....lets see the pics =)

yeah really

Man, I tell you - if you can get the $$, just buy it all. Like they said - you could get a bit back by selling the extra equipment.... But then - it might be a little hard to sell if the only other reefer in Alaska is now leaving.

Yeah, I would bite the bullet and take the whole thing. That is a phenomenal deal.
Nevertheless, if you are really just going to take the corals, try to get a list of all or most of what he has and price them out individually. I am sure he wants to get rid of the whole set-up as fast as possible, though, so I would really try to help him out and take it all for the price he is asking.

I am working a new job and I went from not being able to walk to now 12 hours a day nonstop, 6 days a week.
She now misses me tinkering around with the tanks and DIY builds. But yes we are ALL familiar with "Taking the proposal back to the boss"

Yeah, that is an idea. Buy the whole set-up, and then whatever you do not use, sell it to other fellow reefers on the boards here. Then, everyone wins. The guy sells his stuff quickly and for the price he wants, you get a awesome deal, and the members of this board get a lot of great-priced stuff. The only items you could not sell here are the tank, stand, refuge, sump, etc. unless it was local pick-up (since it would be impossible to ship anywhere). However, you could make $600 of your money back on rock if you charge $3 per pound of rock. You could sell that rock in a matter of days if you unloaded it at $3 per pound. You could probably get at least another $500 for the lights and reactor, which would leave you with the tank, stand, sump, fuge, other fish for $400. You could unload the tank to someone for $150 just to get rid of it, and tell them that you will throw in the stand and filter for another $150. That leaves you paying $100 for the corals that would easily have cost at least $1000, if not WAY more, depending on what he has.
Plus, you get the satisfaction of knowing that everyone is happy with the transaction.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys, I have not even had a chance to check the board because I bought all of the rock and corals for $400 and he gave me the 100 gal tank! I got over 200 lbs of live rock, 60 corals (almost all stoney's), a purple tang, blue tang, green mandarin and some clowns (going to have to trade almost all of them in since I only have a 92) He still has tons of equipment including a 72 inch light with halides, etc that retails for $900 he will sell for $250. If there is anything you guys are looking for just let me know @ tadforrest@gmail.com and maybe we can trade. I have over 90 corals now!!!!
A lot of the rock is in a huge rubbermaid with a heater and a maxi jet and there is zoos all over the rocks and a bunch of leathers on the rock. I may have to break some of them apart because some of the rocks are almost 2 ft in diameter. I KNOW I don't want to... but ???
Here is a pic of the tank before we pulled it apart.

man wish I was close I could really use the rock if going for less than LFS ($6.99-$8.99 lbs)
but with shipping I would be right in the same price area

So my local LFS gave me $250 and $250 credit for about 250 pounds of live rock and about 100 pounds of live sand and some misc corals. I NEVER thought i would have too many corals or live rock.... but I do. So I made $100 on the deal.... but I have spent almost 2 days driving back and forth and lugging all of the rock around.
A word to the wise... be careful what you wish for. I have really enjoyed picking and choosing corals over the past 9 months I have had this most recent tank and watching them grow. Being given all of this stuff is not as nice or as much fun as I would have thought. Maybe in a few days when my back stops aching and I am able to aquascape a little better I will be changing my tune. I will take a pic today of what it looks like prior to aquascaping.

There are some descent ones, The reef and Animal House are two locally owned and they are nice people and try to help as much as they can.
Hey would you like the 100 gallon tank with the stand? The guy is willing to just give it away and I did not pick it up yet, but it is yours if you want it. His house is in wasilla. If you are moving soon just let me know.
Also I will gladly give you some of these corals that I have doubles of and frag a bunch of them to get you started when you move.
