I totally agree about the government not stopping it. Your comment about nobody caring if a Christian or Jewish group placed a building there has no bearing on the issue, like reb posted they didn't fly planes into the buildings. If you don't think hell would be raised if a Christian group tried to place a memorial to aborted babies on the site where a fundamentalist bombed an abortion clinic you are nuts.
I am pleased that you agree with me for the most part. And I retract my last statement about the Christian/Jewish building being built at the site. That was some of my bias showing through and I apolagise. I think what needs to be understood here is that in any situation where something is going to be built on controversal grounds your going to have conflict. However we need to understand that this country was built on tolerance of everything from religion to way of life. Once we forget this I belive our country very well be doomed to hypocrisy.

New Yorkers dont care! there is a 50 year old Mosque 4 blocks away and numerous falafel stands and islamic owned businesses right near ground zero. this is crazy! it's privately owned land and government has no business in it even if it were a strip club called
had!
all right wingers want less government, less restrictions, less involvement. but somehow they want the white house to stop a private business deal over some land 2 blocks away from the towers because they want to build a mosque. thats nothing more than islamic hatred/racism. we were founded by people who wanted religious freedom and islam is one of the largest if not the largest religion in the world.
the religion of islam didn't fly planes into buildings, a group of WACKOS led by a larger group of wackos did. were they islamic? yes, atleast they believed so. were the christians who burned "witches" at the stake christians? they believed so.
were the inquisitors of the spanish inquisition christians? they believed they were too. christians have their fare share of wackos, killers, zealots, con-men, and child abusers. both now and throughout history, so does islam and every-other major religion. hell the Jews crucified Jesus! lol.

You do realize you just labelled all right wingers with your statement...which inturn is a form of segregation/hatred. Irony?
Pay attention. Go back through the thread and point out the number of rightwingers that want the government to stop this.
Most of them stated the felt the government had no business dictating on this. But we all agree it is insensitive and wrong.
You speak of a mosque four blocks away (which translates anywhere from 1/2 a mile to a full mile depending on which part of New York). It was built 50 years ago...already there before 9/11. You mention private businesses...not the same either.
This new mosque will be 13 stories tall...with the ability to look DOWN on ground zero from the top.Apparently you fail to see the significance of this. As stated if the proprietor truly wished to expand sensitivity they would not be insensitive to others in doing so.
This discussion has mainly been about sensitivity and caring about others. This Mosque does not display those qualities.
Are you telling me YOU would not take issue with a christian group under the name of Eric Robert Rudolph, building a 13 story cathedral 1/2 a block from the abortion clinic that was bombed in Sandy Springs Alabama?

I also agree with your last statement. It just really amazes me that none of the usual suspects like the ACLU are raising the issue of separation on church and state with the Imam being sent to tout Muslim life in America. I don't think it's a bad idea but in a environment where all hell broke loose over a cross overlooking a veterans cemetery it just highlights the anti christian bias these groups seem to have.

And as my post mentioned we shouldn't celebrate the Christian wackos either. Existing Muslim owned businesses or Mosques aren't the issue here. It's building a new on on the site where we were attacked in the name of Islam. As I stated it wouldn't be seen as tolerable for even a majority of "right wingers" if some group sought to build a abortion memorial or even a branch of a fundimentalist church on the site where some wacko bombed an abortion clinic.
Also I have seen a great number of "right wingers" make the same point I have about wanting common sense, not the government to stop the Mosque. It would be wrong for local authorities to change zoning for the expressed purpose of blocking this particular project, no matter how distasteful it might be.

Looks like the New York mosque will have a new neighbor...

Greg Gutfield To Open A Gay Bar Next To Ground Zero Mosque To Cater To Islamic Gay Men
by Jon Bershad | 8:23 pm, August 9th, 2010
No, this is not a joke. In fact, it is instead one of the most brilliant pieces of provocations in recent years.Greg Gutfield from Fox News' Red Eye announced today via his blog
http://www.dailygut.com/?i=4696 that he is actively speaking to investors and plans on opening a gay bar next to the controversial mosque being built near Ground Zero in New York. To make matters worse (better?) the bar will be specifically designed to cater to homosexuals of the Islamic faith. God, this is going to be an exciting block.
Here's Gutfield's entire post
http://www.dailygut.com/?i=4696 which he will expand upon during tonight's Red Eye:
So, the Muslim investors championing the construction of the new mosque near Ground Zero claim it's all about strengthening the relationship between the Muslim and non-Muslim world.
As an American, I believe they have every right to build the mosque after all, if they buy the land and they follow the law “ who can stop them?
Which is, why, in the spirit of outreach, I've decided to do the same thing.
I'm announcing tonight, that I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque Park51, in an available commercial space.
This is not a joke. I've already spoken to a number of investors, who have pledged their support in this bipartisan bid for understanding and tolerance.
roman">As you know, the Muslim faith doesn't look kindly upon homosexuality, which is why I'm building this bar. It is an effort to break down barriers and reduce deadly homophobia in the Islamic world.
The goal, however, is not simply to open a typical gay bar, but one friendly to men of Islamic faith. An entire floor, for example, will feature non-alcoholic drinks, since booze is forbidden by the faith. The bar will be open all day and night, to accommodate men who would rather keep their sexuality under wraps but still want to dance.
Bottom line: I hope that the mosque owners will be as open to the bar, as I am to the new mosque. After all, the belief driving them to open up their center near Ground Zero, is no different than mine.
My place, however, will have better music.

^This plus a pork barbecue place, let's see how "sensitive" the IMAM is then.
I was just thinking a hog farm but a Boogers House of Pork sounds like a good idea too.

It's just pretty sad the people pushing this Mosque are so tone deaf but then again the "Moderate" Imam claims the US has more innocent blood on it's hands than Al Qeada. Is it really tone deaf or are they trying to send a message?
