911!!!!

We need a lot more information before we can help you with this. What are your water parameters for starters?? What temp was the new water as compared to the tank water? What was the specific gravity of the new water as compared to the tank water?

I AM VERY NEW AT THIS AND MY FISH GUY OVIOUSLY DOESNT KNOW WHAT THE HELL HES TALKING ABOUT. THIS IS MY FIRST WATER CHANGE I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MY PERIMITERS ARE OR HOW TO TELL IM SERIOUSLY LOOKING FOR HELP HERE IT A 55 REEF I BROUGHT A WATER SAMPLE INTO MY FISH GUY HE SAID REMOVE 1/2 THE WATER AND PUT IN NEW SO IFILLED BUCKETS PUT SALT IN THEM GOT THEM TO THE CORRECT TEMP AND SALINITIE AND ADDED IT TO THE TANK

What you are seeing is not uncommon when we do a very large water change.
Corals will see this large change in water chemistry and respond negatively.
They may sluff off mucus or close up.
Leathers do it all the time.
My open brains do not like large water changes either.
Doing a 50% water change as your very first - to me is extreme.
Normally a large water change like that is only in emergency situations.
If this is your first water change - I'm "assuming" you just recently set up the tank ???
Did you let the tank "cycle" and monitor it's progression ?
If this is a new tank - keeping an open brain or ANY coral in there is almost asking for trouble.
Corals do much better in more mature/established tankwater chemistry.
How long has this tank been set up, and are you using ANY test kits ?

i'm not using any test kits, any suggestions as to what one to get? the tank has been running for almost 8 months. i do not know how offten to do water changes or how much i should be changing after reading you guys for the past week i total relize my fish guy sucks and i need alot of help and info. so if any one can help out i would reallly apriciate it. the tank does seem to be doing better right now the fish have gotten their collor back and have slowed down their breathing but im still worried about the coral. is it going to b o.k.?

It sound like it will be ok. You stressed the kaka out of it and it may take a few days to recover.
test kits: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, calcium, ph, alk to start with. Keep track of your test results. This will be helpful incase anything happens down the road.
water changes: this varies - 5% each week, or 10% every other week, use RO water for topping off in between changes. I do 5% weekly and test my water weekly.
