hi yall!
just wanted to post a thread on a mistake i have been making with out noticing! hope this may help some others out!!!
i have been fighting with some cynoa in my tank and thought i had it whipped turns out i was wrong! my paras have all been where they are suppose to be! cept the trates have been high and couldnt figure out as to why! when i was in the tank this morning to clean up what i could on the cyano i moved a rock and a whole bunch of uneaten food came out from under the rock. now i know why my trates are to high!!!
but when i feed my tank i dont ever see and uneaten food floating around and my little nemos are always still looking for food! so i assumed they were eating all the food! wrong! the fish are like little 5 year olds taking the peas off there plate and feeding the dog under the table!!!
recently i learned i need more flow in my tank which will help keep the uneaten food and fish poo in the water to be filtered out ..but also i read about a thread about what people feed there fish and i have been using mostly flakes which alot of people do not suggest from what i read! so will have to do some more research on what all to feed my fish.
so the moral of the story is to keep a close eye on how much you feed!!
it can save some big head aches trying to figure out why things are going the way they are in your tank!!
hope this helps some one else out there!!!

lol nice, this is a very common thing i think, i tought my clowns to eat the flakes from my hand since they are my only fish in my 72 (waitin till the 125 to cycle to get more, im wondering if other fish will eat from my hands too) but feeding by hand you know the fish eat how much u give them and no food is floating around (unless of course they take too big of a chunk to swallow and try to eat it and then cough and spit half of it out and try to get the rest before it floats away) but other than that i think it makes feeding time more fun for me too lol

I am not sure, so might want to check, by usually cyano is associated with low oxygen levels, more so than nitrates.

Feeding some dried seaweed is a good way to ensure that you don't have uneaten food rotting in your tank. You just rip off a small square and roll it into a 'tube' shape, then I like to use a small rubberband to secure it to a small rock and place it on the sandbed. The fish will rip off bite-sized pieces. After a few hours whatever is uneaten I just remove from the tank.
Increasing flow will help, but it sounds like you may be feeding too much if there's so much flake that it has time to collect at the bottom around rocks.
