A case for LED lighting.

I have done a fair share of research on LED lighting and their viability when used on a reef tank. My own experience with LED lighting since January of this year after running 150 MH HQI lamps for over 2 years has me convinced that;
You can grow SPS coral as well if not better with LED
The cost is dramatically lower to run LED over the MH I was running (electric bills)
The heat poured into my tank from lighting with LED is much less
There is virtually no bulb replacement costs
You still get the fantastic shimmer with LED that you get from MH.
Color temperature is controllable (at least with my fixture) infinitesimally.
Timing is also controllable infinitesimally. (again with my fixture)
Plus my controller has the cooler than cool THUNDERSTORM option!!!!
By the way I am using the AquaIlluminations SOL Super Blue fixture.
Coupled with these observations on my part here is a good article from Sanjay Joshi on the benefits of LED lighting from a scientific point of view.

Just sayin....................

So what are you trying to say, Henry...are you happy with your fixture?

Now that folks have been ironing out the kinks and figureing out what works lets hope that companies can start getting past those patenting issues so that we could begin to see more cooler than cool fixtures hitting the market and bringing those prices down a lil bit.

My next tank is going to be LED.
I think given enough time people will start coming around. The information and success stories are out there, you just have to look. People were (and still kind of are) skeptical about the ability of T5 to sustain corals when they first started becoming mainstream, and now look.

I have two reef tanks with Sol systems on them and am very happy. Utility bill lower and I, like Spanko, enjoy the unlimited combinations of white, blue and 'deep blue' lighting combos available.
The controller that comes with the Sol systems has proved to be a bit tricky.

more options? theres TONS of options. the spring frag swap was today but couldnt go due to an ear infection. we have another one in fall, and i should have my led/t5 hybrid up by then if you guys come down. i promise you, you'll hate actinic t5 once you see royal blue supplementation

I agree, expecially for zoanthids and palythoas. Actinic blue can't hold a candle to it.
I also really love my LEDs. 1 bad part of 27W of LED over a 3g pico is there is just an INSANE amount of light, so my zoos and palys tend to smaller in diameter, but grow really fast.
My captain america palys are about the size of an eraser.
