A Couple of Unusual Things...

My LFS has a small nano tank setup, for display purposes, at their cash register. I was checking out the other day and noticed two rather unusual things in there. There was a shrimp, marked up like a peppermint shrimp, but was totally translucent, with the markings white. I asked the LFS owner what kind of shrimp it was, but he said that he didn't know. He said it came in with a batch of peppermints, but he couldn't find it in any books. Has anyone else seen these? The other interesting thing that I saw in there was a mushroom growing on the back of one of their turbo snails. How would a mushroom grow on the back of a snail? It was kind of cool looking, but I can't come up with a rational answer for how that happened. The owner said it, too, came in from his supplier like that.

Maybe... I will have to look at a picture of a harlequin shrimp. This one looked exactly like a peppermint, except where a peppermint is red, this one was translucent.

No, I just looked at a picture of a harlequin shrimp. It was not like that at all. It was completely translucent with some white markings.

As for the shroom, I have seenpictures of snails with Zenia on their backs, yellow polyps ont heir backs etc.
I have no idea how it happens, but some things will grow anywhere!
Also, I believe there is an "anemone shrimp" as well (might be the same as the harlequin, but I really do not know). So check those two out, and maybe it will look like one of them.

OK... I found these on a website... Apparently it is a clear peppermint shrimp. I have 4 pics, but the boards database appears to be having trouble again. Here is a link, then, to where I found the pics.

As far as the shroom goes, do you think that some fish dealers glue stuff like that on the back of a snail? It's the only rational explanation that I can come up with.
Yeah, it must be really confusing when those shrimp molt. I think I am going to go back to that fish store and make that guy an offer on that shrimp (he currently is using it as a display and isn't selling it). I think it would be a really cool addition to my tank.

I don;t think so. I mean, you see pictures of snails with hair algae, and like I said, I saw one with a yellow polyp on it.
Given enough time in a closed environemnt weird things will happen. Perhaps the snail sat beside some mushrooms for an extended period of time (I haveone snail that only moves like every thrid day!) and at that exact poin in time, the shroom grew on to it.
Unlikely I know, but very possible given the correct circumstances.
I really hope nobody would glue a shroom to a snail.
