A different question.

For the past 6 months, I have been using my H.O.T. 250 cannister filter as a powerhead. I was wondering if I could put LS in the filter and if this would add any benefit to my tank. When running empty, my filter is only half full of water and discharges bubble into my tank. Since no light would be getting to the LS in the filter, would this act like a DSB and help to remove nitrates? Am I trying to be too creative, or is this an idea worth trying?

First off, i'd say don't put any sand in your filter! It will probably get in the propeller housing and trash your filter. I had a HOT 250 for about 9 months. It worked fine at first, but soon it made tons of bubbles wich entered my tank. I did all i could think of to fix the problem but finally gave up due to frustration. Now, my brother uses it on his 29g fresh water tank. Sorry i couldn't be more help.

My magnum is 5yrs old and I never have had a problem with it. I plan on using a larger grain of sand, almost crushed coral size so the sand doesn't blow out of the filter and into the tank. Any other ideas?

I wouldn't do it. Also, the deep sand bed is acting not because of no light, but because it provides an anoxic (no O2)zone. You can't produce this effect with what you want to do.

You are technically correct. I just figured for the purposes it serves the tank, it is the lack of oxygen that is important.
