A Fuge in the DT?

Ok, so I'm hopefully getting a new tank soon, and I want to have a center island of LR in that tank. Arches, caves, the whole shebang. However, I want this tank to be made of homemade LR only (after I seed it), I was wondering if I could build the rock around a peice of PVC that, in the bottom, has two sets of holes. One would fit a powerhead just so I can spray water through it, and on the opposite side it would have some little holes. In this PVC will be some sort of micro algea, either sponges or extreemly porus LR rubble for pods to breed, and it'll be open at the top (some type of mesh over it from keeping critters from getting in). It'll act as a little fuge, and will be hidden and exist within the LR. When I needed the pods to actually go into the tank, I'd take the powerhead off of the tank wall, stick the part where the water comes out in the larger hole, and hopefully spray out a ton of pods from the opposite side. When I finished, I'd just put the powerhead back on the tank wall.
Does anyone think that this would be a good idea? I like little projects like this, and I think it would be kind of origional. Plus, the last time I messed with a sump (w/fuge), it was an epic fail, and the HOB filter fuges I"d need an extra light for. This one, the DT light would work for the algea. I don't know how large this tank is going to be yet, but I will get the biggest peice of PVP that will fit, with rock still around it looking pretty. Anyone like the idea?

If you have a small pvc pipe with mesh over the top, hardly no light is going to get through to the algae so that is probably not a good idea imo. You would have to get a large piece of pvc for enough light to get to the algae and I am talking 6 or more inches in diameter. I guess it all depends on the size of your tank.
Look into in tank fuge's that have suction cups and come with their own powerhead. You can put it at the back of your tank and put live rock in front of it and nobody would be the wiser!

Huh, I didn't even know those existed. lol I'll go check them out.
Ok, so nix the mesh. What if I built the rock (and pipe), high enough to come to the top or stick out of the water a little? The opening would be very close to the lights, and there would be no cover.

I am going to agree with the light thing..it is the first thing that came to mind as I read your idea. The hang on the back fuge is what I also want to get...another $200.00

I can't post the link as it is at a competitor's site, but here is a pic:

It was only $40! It comes with it's own little powerhead and they make a larger version if you want that. If you just cannot part with $40-60, then go to your local dollar store, buy a clear plastic/plexiglass container, drill a few holes in each side, and glue some suction cups to it. You would have to attach it where it would get ample water flow though so maybe near a powerhead.
Those are great for aquariums like the Red Sea Max or just the plain Jane glass aquarium where you don't have a fuge beneath the display or you can't mod the tank like you could with a Biocube.
