A live rock bio-filter

Today I was visiting the LFS and I happend to sneak a peek at the bottom of their tanks to see what they were packing in there.. One set up I seen had a large sump with nothing but stacked up live rock inside.. I asked the LFS dude about it and he said he prefers live rock to actual bio-balls. He said they'll actually keep the tank cleaner.
Kinda made me want to take some coral rubble and tuck under the bioballs for some extra filtration! You guys think this would be a bad idea?

I don't like bioballs. The live rock does a much better job and doesn't lead to algae blooms 2 years down the road like bioballs tend to. Just my opinion. I took the carbon filter pads out of both of my filters and replaced with nylon stockings full of aragonite sand.

Does the ocean use bio balls????? lol, just messin with ya, it's alot more effective, I changed my friends 3 year old 150 gal. over from bio balls to 65 lbs of LR about 2 months ago. The water is clearer and his corals seem to like it more. I would prefer to go more natural when it comes to my tanks.
