I am 30. When i was a kid i dreamed of having a saltwater tank with cool fish in it.
I never got it because of money.
Now that i have a 4 year old i want to give this gift to her for Christmas.
although money is still tight. I want to start small but don't want to waste my time with fresh water.
I don't want to take up someones prescious time by asking for all the answers but maybe just some direction as to where i can go to find a basic outline of what i need to buy to get started with a 10 gallon tank.
This seems like a great website to get info and buy fish but i just need to know what to purchase (cheap as possible) then "Santa" can come back on this board and grab a couple cool fish.
any help?

hopefully this light hearted email will be read by someone who is a dad and knows how cool it'd be to give your little one this gift... unfortunetly i'm not the most "informed" guy on the subject
Sincerely,
Santa (Jason)

Personally I would go with nothing smaller than a 20 gal. The smaller the tank the harder it is to care for them. As for places to start, try this sites classified or craigs list for your area. No matter what you try to do a salt water tank is never cheap. There is always something that you need. Good luck, and I hope others have some advice for you.
By the way there is always great info on most questions you will have on these boards. I search for specific questions or ask if I can not find the answer I need. The users on here are always helpful!!

Step one, buy a 20gallon or larger tank
Step two read this http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/sta...ss/aqsetup.htm

I think the cheapest way to get into saltwater keeping would be to get a 12 gallon Nanocube. By the time you buy filters and powerheads and a light you're going to spend as much as a nano costs. Look for one on the site that auctions stuff. Other start-up costs include:
-Sand ($20)
-Liverock ($3.50-$6/lb and you will want 10-20 lbs)
-Heater ($10-20)
-A bag of salt ($20)
-Hydrometer ($30 for a decent one)
-Test Kit ($30)
If you can get a saltwater tank up and running successfully the first time for under $300 you're better than me! Good luck!
