A new Beginning

Hello everyone, It's been quite a while, but once again I'm back and trying to see what I can accomplish my second time around. As I said it's been a long time and unfortunately I was never able to get that 125gal. set-up and running due to moving into a smaller place. Yes I ended up selling my dream.
It's been some years now and the whole time I basically only kept my one tank running as a L/S & L/R tank with nothing else after we got hit with 2 hurricanes, lost power for weeks and I lost everything.
I somehow managed to keep the rock alive through everything and finally I just caved in to the temptations. So....
36gal. Bowfront
75lbs L/R (don't ask, I just seemed to acquire it over time)
2-3in CC bed
I upgraded to a Fluval 205 early last month and within 1 week seen a huge difference over the old hang on canister (MAX H.O.T. Magnum canister)
Last month I also began using PurpleUp because the L/R had/has tons of coraline algea. No, I didn't expect it to grow I need to upgrade my lighting to something more suited for corals. Basic light strips just haven't cut it for me.

Last night I caved in and did some aquascaping as to clean the CC and make it a tad more eye appealing, as well give some better places for fish/coral. Today I bought 6 damsels...
1 pair of Yellowtail Damsels
1 pair of Domino Damsels
1 pair of 3 Stripe Damsels
They were all in the same tank at the store, so I simply assumed they would be fine together here.
They are now on hour 4 of the acclimation process. (I do it the hard way.)
I'm looking to upgrade the tank itself within the next few months to possibly a 46gal+ and replace the CC with a DSB. I was told years ago when I started that CC was easier to keep, but it just looks nasty over time. No matter how much I clean it, it always looks "old". Not to mention it cuts down on my sand sifting livestock options IMO.
Anyway, Being I'm starting over again and I'm willing to consider myself a "Novice" again, any/all suggestions are appreciated

cc sux imo.
After so much time with it, then seeing 10+ year established tanks with sand, I've come to agree with you completely. One of the reasons I want to go with a somewhat bigger tank using just a DSB.
With the CC I feel almost as if I'm working with a nano, and have been losing the whole time.

When I first got into sw tanks, I used cc on the advice of an lfs in my area. As my tank started to age, the cc started to look really dirty. Also, at the time I didn't realize that cc is not real friendly to critters in the substrate, not to mention the problems with nitrate build up etc.
Ultimately, I switched to live sand(1" to 2" deep). This has worked much better for me.
