to get an idea that's a surface skimmer that'd hook to the intake on an aquaclear..
this one draws water from the bottom and surface of the tank though... I dunno if you'll be able to fabricate something this complex.

for the Harlequin shrimp that what they eat.
On the snail thing, the certh's and turbo's don't look too much like the banana slugs, and they cruise the glass.

Look up harlequin shrimp, they are beautiful. However they will only eat starfish. What you can do though, is rotate stars. So put one in, or cut an arm off every few days.

Here is a pic of my 2.8 gal pico tank. I am just using a HOB nano filter on this tank. There is a nano skimmer/filter HOB that you can buy for these little tanks, I believe it is good up to 10 gal. I prefer not to skim in such a small tank, I never skimmed on my 10 gal either.

Just watch out on the bulbs and make sure you don't over heat the tank LOL...
how high will the fixture put the bulbs above the surface of the water?
dude that thing is 17.7inches wide, your tank is 12.... they don't have any smaller ones or anything?
anyway you could do a side by side fixture?? where each bulb has its own reflector? not like that one you pictured though... you know what I mean by side by side right?

Very glad that you and Jess have a tank finally, not mater how small it is. Get that thing cycled and throw some tangs in there!
JK. You should see if you have anyone in the area or LFS that could give you the LS and LR. You are obviously not going to need a lot, and if you can get it out of an established tank, your cycle should be nil. Have fun with whatever you do with the stocking. I would suggest getting cyled, and adding a small Goby. When yopu guys get moved turn that bad boy into your horse tank. That will give you time to experience some things and you won;t have to put horses throught the stress of moving. Congrats

that'll be ghetto... try making a side by side fixture... even if it means pulling the reflectors off 2 8inch walmart dome lights and putting both light sockets on a mount with individual reflectors lol..

I don't know anything about that fixture but in the past I have used the coralife pc bulbs. As mentioned they might be to hot for that size of tank if you use 2 of them that would be 40 watts.
On my tank I have the Coralife 18 watt 50/50 9" fixture and just love it. They do get very hot on the top so one would not want to put it into a canopy of any kind unless you unstall a fan to keep it coo.
I have not had any issues with this fixture and my temp in the tank. It basically sits over the tank.
It is perfect for this size of tank. They are relativley cheap, something you might want to look at also before making a decision.
