A question about 96wtt PC bulbs...

Hi guys,
I've got the new cheapie Odyssea 2x96wtt PC lights that sposed to come with a 12K day light and a "true" actinic blue at I believe 420nm.
Been on the boards, or as my wife calls my "fish ----"
and haven't been able to find a good breakdown on the explanation of all the different kind of bulbs out there.
All I know are mine are 96wtt straight pins and the above information. I've read it's good idea to switch bulbs and my gut tells me with price I paid for these lights I couldn't expect quality bulbs. However, I've been running them for going on 2 mos, and have about 4 various kind of shrooms and about 5 polyps of zoos of a frag that seems to be doing fine and the shrooms look bigger/better than they did at the LFS. I've had them about 3 weeks now and they look great. I'm taking things real slow, I'm gonna try some more zoos this week

I need somebody to give me the breakdown on what are good bulbs to replace them with. The only place i can find 12k bulbs online is the place I bought the lights from and I'm sure would just be the same thing I have in there. Everywhere else online, I commonly find 10k's, 50/50's, and actinics for 96w straights. And after much searching, I found 1 place online that had what are called Sunpaq's in a 96w straight...that was difficult to find IMHO.

Has a dual day 10K/6,700k
and a dual actinic 420nm/460nm for basically, after shipping, close to what I paid for the light itself

I have no problem buying these lights if they will be worth it. How would this benefit my tank vs just going with standard 10K's and Actinics, just a different brand?
Is it better to concentrate on daylight i.e. have a 10K and a 50/50?
For actinics is it better to have the dual 420 for the softies or is one fine and the 460nm really bring out the colors like some people say?
I've done enough reading on bulbs to get confused....

I've read the thread on Odysseas so please don't rip on me about my lights, I'm only keeping softies.
I'll look into upgrading later but for now a $100 light setup and up to $80 for a new set of excellent bulbs(which I would have to get at some point anyway) still seems like a good trade off for the 192wtts of PC lights and built in LEDs and fans. I run it on a 46gal bow.
I appreciate any help, and would like to know what everybody thinks, but please no ripping on the new guy!

I have a 46 bow tank as well. I run a dual satellite on my tank. It was shipped with the dual daylight (10k & 6700k) and dual actinic. I suggest you stick with the dual actinic. You'll find the dual actinic is the best at bringing out flourescents in your corals and yet adding a blue tint to the tank.
I would however suggest going straight 10k daylight. I don't like the 6700k bulb. It's a little yellow and imo causes a little more algae problem. You should be able to get these bulbs for less than $60 if you search. Corallife bulbs are more expensive, I just go with the current bulbs. They work just fine!!

So just go with straight 10K and dual 420nm and 460nm actinics...yeah I figured I could go cheaper but was wondering if the benefit is worth the added cost. Thanks for your input on the 6700k.

This is a pain....

If I can find a place that has the 96wtt straight pin dual actinics 420 + 460
it doesn't have just standard 10k daylights, just the dual 10k and 6700k in straights.
If I find a place that has 96wtt straight 10ks it doesn't have the dual actinics I want.
It looks like I'm going to have to try the dual daylights unless anyone has some suggestions. Trying to avoid two shipping charges.

Boy you're right! I tried to help out some, but having straight pin just plain, uh how do I put it?? SUCKS!!!
I can't find the dual actinic in straight pin. I can find the 10k pretty easily.
Question, have you found anyone that has a 50/50 of 10k and 420? Then maybe by chance they have a 10k/460? That would work as well. You're basically still getting the 10k and the dual actinic, just seperated.
Just a thought.
Worst case, you can go wtih a straight true actinic. It will work out just fine.

Thanks for your help, I've been on about every site I could google. I can at least replace with cheaper standard bulbs pretty easy. Much harder to find the "nifty" stuff.

current usa has 96w smartpag 420/460nm straight pin bulbs. I have a JBJ straight pin dual 96w fixture and I have no problem finding them. even locally. anywhere that sells current usa can get them if they dont have them.

Thank you for that as well, I'll ask my LFS what they can do.
