A sea apple for father's day...

That's the dilemma. My kids gave me a sea apple for my 125 marine tank (fish & inverts). I have always avoided those creatures who have the ability to decmiate a tank by releasing a toxin when/if they are stressed or die.
I don't have any first hand experience with sea apples so I don't know how great a risk it is. Of course, the LFS where it was purchased insist they are very hardy and should present no problem (they also have a policy of no-returns on salt water creatures so that door was shut too).
Options I've considered are 1) putting it in my QT tank which currently has no residents, 2) giving it away or 3) rolling the dice and leaving it in my 125...
I'd appreciate hearing from any one who may have experience with them.
Thanks!

Maybe it was your wife's secret idea for the kids to get you one in hopes you'll quit messing with your tank all the time because the apple will destroy it. LOL
Just kiddin', hopefully it was the thought that counts.

Yeah, Tangsfornuttin is right. I guess you have to keep it since your kids got it for you. Setup and put it in a species only tank.

What you do is tell your kids is that you like it so much that you want to be able to see it all the time. However since your 125 is so big, it will hide and you will not be able to see it. So you have to set up a smaller tank so that you will be able to see it better.

I would explain the problem to your kids and take it back.
If you don't next time the LFS will talk them into Feather Star or a Look Down Jack, etc.
Tell them that Gift Certificates are greatly appreciated ;)

They certainly can be kept, but with some serious thought about their needs. First, I would also encourage your wife not to buy animals, but go for a gift certificate instead :)
There are some good posts on these, but I can't give links here :)
You can write me at ophiuroid@att.net and I will direct you to them. :D

All, thanks for all the input. I do appreciate it.
sammystingray - I have the following fish in the 125:
- coral bueaty
- royal gramma
- black & white heniochus (2)
- scooter blenny
- percula clown (2)
- 6 line wrasse
- green chromis (3)
- Assorted cleanup crew (hermits, snails, 2 brittle stars, CB shrimp)
- large leather
- smattering of pulsing xenia
- large plate coral
- fox coral
- horn coral
- numerous mushrooms
- a couple of other soft corals
golfish - wasn't looking for an "ok" nod - sorry it sounded that way to you. I am genuinely looking for input into making a decision since I don't have any real knowledge of these creatures.
ophiura - "you've got mail" - I would appreciate those links to assist the decision making process.
I have "coached" my wife to call first before acquiring additions to the tank (last time she did but wanted this to be a surprise...). My son actually did go the gift certificate route but my twin daughers wanted to give dad something more tangible...
I appreciate all the input - for now I am going to move it to my QT tank until I decide whether to dub the QT a "species" tank (and use another tank as QT) or give it away - either to the LFS as golfish recommended or to another hobbiest with the appropriate environment.

Hi there,
Awww dont you love kids :D
I had a sea apple when i first started out and my conditions were awful, i mean awful! The LFS didnt tell me anything about them. having said that it survived for 9 months or more! I would suggest setting up a species tank or taking it somewhere that will give you credit?
Good luck,
Tim.

My brother and mother got me a sea apple for a birthday or something like that. A few weeks later the whole tank crashed. Lost everything but 2 damsels and a tang. This was a while ago, but I will never get another sea apple. They look awesome, though.
