A step in the right derection

after my tank was wiped out I have been battling greenwater and hair algea
to couter this I have been doing 50% water changes as fast as I can mix them but after a month I havent been seeing any results
I plan on scubbing all the rock bare and doing a 100% water change
if that doesn't work I will do another 100% and change the sand
is this a step in the right derection

What type of water are you using? You might want to try a turf scrubber. If all the livestock is wiped out, you may want to cook the rock, thoroughly clean all equipment and start from scratch. Sometimes drastic times call for drastic measures.

cook it gemmy? Wouldnt that make it dead rock ? The OP would have to use something live eg. live sand, to start it back up correct? Since theirs no fish or inverts, I would keep doing the 50% water changes and turkey baster the crap out of ur rocks, also cleaning the glass of ur tanks everyday or 2 days faithfully! However it would prob be quicker and easier to just empty and clean lol guess im not much help.

What kind of readings are you seeing with your test kits? How many fish were not recovered from the tank? Just currious.

HOLY CRAPS i didnt know ur tank was so huge lol. After looking at ur link, im going to say this is WAY out of my league lol.... good luck and i hope more helpful people will chime in. No wonder you couldnt find all the fish, you would need scuba gear lol and theres so many !!!!!

well if you consider 55 gallons huge then be my guest
non of the nine fish recovered (only 5 were found)
my test kit isn't the greatest and my skimmer is on the fritze
the only reading I trust is the .25 ppm phosphates

If you are planning to stay in this hobby indefinitely which I hope you are then IMO brake your system down bleach and start over again

Joe I'm going to disagree with you on this one and usually I'm in total agreement with your advise. You have a health bacteria colonies living on all your rocks and sand why destroy that. I would first get your prams., if they are way out of whack do water changes to get them down, as for the green water you have micro algae growing good time start a pod colony. As for the hair algae a clean up crew of hermit crabs will mow this down and many other creatures would also eat this, such as urchins, lawnmower blenny and others depending on want you want to keep.

My point of view it seems water changes are doing nothing. IMO once GHA get a hold of your tank drastic measures are needed. I am not a big fan of crabs as CUC urchins will eat coralline. Sometimes you just have to start over. Again this is IMO

i am starting to get things under controle
my Phosphates are down below.1ppm and the water is starting to clear up
