a water question plz help

hey guys i have a water ? ok its like this i buy pre made water from a fish store all seemd fine but the thing is he tells me that i have to use half and half water when my water evaps but this is becoming costly for a 16 year ol to keep buying water is there sumpting else i can do to help lighten this load its a pain and am i being lied to plz help me plz

When the water evaporates from your tank, it is not taking any of the salt with it (as more water evaporates your salinity will increase). Meaning, for top off water you should only be using fresh water. Seeing as though you have a smaller tank, i would consider just going to a grocery store and snagging a gallon or two every once in awhile to make up for evaporation. As for buying water from the LFS, you could just buy a small package of Instant Ocean salt and mix your own water. Might be cheaper in the long run.

If you figure out how much you're spending for water, you may want to invest in an RO/DI unit which will save you a LOT of money in the long run. Its a hefty initial investment (150-200), but well worth it in the long run. Get the kind that hooks up to the sink, and make your own perfect water whenever you need it. For saltwater replacement, get a commercial salt mix and you're set. I know its a lot up front, but its a better long term solution. (Wow, 2 puns in there, anyone see em?)

T I S C is absoloutely correct. You dont need, nor should you add salt to top off water, because the salt doesnt evaporate. You can pick up quality water at your grocery store from .29 to $1.50 a gallon. I would suggest using RO water, if your grocery store has a "fill your own bottle" machine i would reccomend using it. If there is a Wal - Mart near you odds are there is a RO machine in the store. Get a bag of Instant Ocean to mix your own SW when its time to do a water change. This will be cheaper than buying the premix from your LFS.

i use well water but did test before using nitrates, phosphates. its also a good idea to test for copper also. the trates 5< and phates test 0 so i used that. tanks doing great doesnt cost anything

i agree with the others go to the market and buy your water. but i just want to add i buy distilled water its more pure than the spring water, regular spring water can contain some metals and stuff like that u dont want in your tank.best of luck :)
ps distilled water is about .25 cents more than regular spring water but worth it. imo :)
