When I introduced some toxins ammonia was the very very dark green. way off the api highest range (8ppm). the only thing that saved my fish was I removed them to another tank after losing one.
I then treated the tank following directions with prime to detox the ammonia. But only treat once. Prime still tests for ammonia but after the treatment the ammonia is locked. Or (good idea) get the multitest ammonia kit which measures free and total ammonia to make sure any ammonia is locked and the dangerous free ammonia is low.
In my case ammonia finally droped down a week later after I rinsed the crushed oyster shells in my wet dry I use for filter material. I think that is where I originally added the toxin and the rerinsing remove the toxin.
that is the only time that has happneed to me. Usually the macro algaes keep up but it is possible to swamp their ammonia capabilities.

ok so my internet is down at my house so i havent been able to post, anyway i cleaned everything out that was dead siphoned up some other junk and added fresh carbon to the filters and another bio zorb bag everything as of lastnite started to clear up and ammonia went down to alittle less than .25. So i wake up this morning and the tank is all cloudy its pretty bad its not sand cloudy but just really hazy ammonia went down alittle more too. What the heck is going on i'm about to lose my mind
