??? about ammonia & nitrate

Haven't tested my established tank for about a month. Everything has been smooth. Tested it last weekend and to my surprise, the ammonia was .25 and nitrates at 30 or 40. These levels have both tested 0 for the past year. Any idea on what's goin on?

You are using RODI or treated tap water? How old is your test kit. You can always confirm your result with another test kit or at the LFS.

Did something die in the tank or did you add any new LR or LS? Have you been performing regular water changes? If so what %?

That's what I was going to ask.

I do 20% water changes monthly. Nothing has died in my tank. All I use is RO DI water. I'm stumped?

You may have just stirred up something that was assorbing the nitrate. I'd say just do about 30% water change this time and check it as soon as the water rotates through your system once, then check it again in a couple of days to see if it's still rising.
