? about cleaner shrimp

I just bought a cleaner shrimp this afternoon, for something to watch.
I got home and temp acclimated him, and before I could set up the drip method, he died. Dead. Gone. $27.50 burnt up and still in the bag. So, I called the LFS and they closed at 4 today, so I left a message about it. I put him in my tank, just in case there is some chance he might still be alive. What could have killed him so quick? Who's fault is it?

Unless you had the shrimp in the bag for 12 hours in extreme heat or cold, I would have to say the blame would have to lay with the LFS.

I would definitely say it's the LFS's fault. How was he doing at the LFS? How about in the bag? Directly before acclimation?
That's strange; I must agree.

He seemed alive at the LFS. He was kicking around in the bag for a bit. I was on the computer waiting for the temp to get right, and the next thing when I look over again, he's belly up.

That´s strange... lol... I think you already know that. It sounds to me like something to do with ammonia but I´m not sure how it would get in the bag... or have to do with this anyways.

I highly doubt that much ammonia could build up in the bag itself during transport, but I honestly don't know. This time, I'm stumped. BangGuy is probably right, stress. But, I don't want to pin it on the LFS if it was my fault. I'll ask for store credit anyway, because I didn't even get to put it in my tank before it died. I can see not bothering about it if I had put it in my tank and it died because of something I did... But in this case, I didn't do anything wrong besides buying it!

I also highly doubt that ammonia could have built up... but what I'm thinking is that for some reason the tank that the shrimp was in had elevated ammonia; and then having the shrimp in the bag with elevated ammonia in a compressed space could have caused something. But I am honestly unsure as you are. Well good luck getting a refund!

I think I am just done in general with my Lfs. This is the third thing I've bought from there that has died way before its time.

Oh, he is good and he has been in business for a long time and knows what he is doing. The problem is that I can never get anything to live that I buy from there. I guess I'll stick to ordering online. My wife is ok with spending the extra money on shipping as long as the stuff lives.

He cost $27! That seems really expensive for a cleaner shrimp! I have never paid more than $15 for a cleaner.

I assume it costs so much because the price of shipping. I know there are cheap internet sources for inverts, fish, and corals, however today I just wanted a shrimp and didn't want to pay the shipping cost.
6 more weeks of letting my tank sit fallow before ich completes it's cycle. Then I'll put in a large order. I'm back to work this coming week! WooHoo!

Nice! Be sure to share some pics of your work (like completed animals)!

Did the tank that the shrimp was in have fish in it also? Shrimp are very susceptible to water parameter changes. IMO 10 min acclamation is way too short. The only time I have lost a cleaner when first introduced into my tank was when I acclimated under an hour. IMO 1 ½ hours is the minimum time for acclimating cleaners .

Snake I just reread your thread, let me understand you were temp acclimating while the shrimp was still in the bag. And after 10 min in the bag the shrimp died, so you never introduced any tank water into the shipping water.

Just for giggles, do you test the bag water from your LFS?
I at least compare pH and salinity to my tank to see if the acclimation period should be slower than "normal".

Lol. He died BEFORE I could acclimate him. He died in the bag while he was being floated with the lights off for temp acclimation.
