How do high Nitrates affect Acro corals?? I know they are not good to have, but what are the signs that the acro's are being affected by the nitrates??

High nitrates for the most part will affect the ability of the coral skeleton to grow.
Will high nitrates cause the coral to begin to die?? I have acro's that have their flesh slowly disappearing. I have looked closely for pests, but have not seen a single one, but my nitrates are considerably high.

Agreed high nitrates will cause death in acropora. How high are yours? I have read that you will want to keep nitrates below 2 to keep acro healthy.

Yikes!!! Below 2!!!! Yeah....well I guess it's time to kick my Fuge project into high gear as my nitrates are normally around 50+.

I have no idea!! I've been trying to figure that out for quite some time now!! My setup is as follows:
180G DT
30G Sump
ASM G3 Skimmer
200 lbs LS
200 lbs LR
10 lbs LR Rubble in sump
2 VorTech PH's

How much food do you feed your fish? what is the TDS reading on your top off water? what brand salt are you using? what do your phosphates look like?
If your phosphates are too high, that will also kill SPS corals really quickly.

phosphates are much worse than nitrates. some people with no nitrates actually try to bump them up to about 5ppm theorizing it correlates with just the enough nutrients to keep them well nurished without too much sacrafice of water quality (I dont subscribe to that as zero nitrates and heavy coral feeding arent mutually exclusive as I feed oysterfeast, amino acids or coral accel two of the three pretty much daily and feed the fish every other day without raising nitrates to 5ppm). Phosphates simply inhibit their ability to calcify and no calcification equals demise. I would say nitrates above 5ppm and phosphates above 0.1ppm are unaccceptable for sps with zero measurable nitrates and phosphates <0.05ppm being ideal. no point of worrying about one without the other being in check.

I feed once a day and its just enough that they eat just about all of it. Very little food makes it to the bottom for my shrimp. Last time i checked my TDS was 6. I use ReefCrystals and my phosphates are zero.

You actually have a pretty high TDS reading for your top off water. It should be anywhere from 0-1 to be clean enough for me to use in my tanks. You might be introducing nitrates into your system without knowing it.

I agree that 6 TDS is on the high side for a reef. I did test the top-off wtaer for both Nitrates and Phosphates and both came out at zero. Can there be something else in the top-off water that may change into Nirtrates once it's introduced to the tank?

What is in the sump?
How frequently are you dumping the skimmer cup?
In the sump, the 2 water drains, drain into filter socks, then the sump where there is a bunch of LR and my skimmer. Iempty my skimmer cup about once a week to week and a hald.
BTW, TruPerc, where in Jersey are you??

You may want to clean the skimmer cup more frequently to see if that helps.
If your production of skimmate is low, you may want to look at adjusting the skimmer.
If you are not running any carbon, this is also something you should consider.
I live in south jersey, which is probably not near you considering your avatar. ;)

My skimmer unfortunately is at the highest point for adjusting. There really isn't much more I can do with that.
I am not running carbon as I am not convinced on the pros and cons for it. I used to run carbon in my smaller tank and my Sailfin tang had HLLE. I stopped running carbon and the HLLE has stopped and actually healed almost completely.
South Jersey....must be an Eagles fan
My gf is from Washington Township right next to Turnersville. She's an Eagles fan
I'm from Morris County.
