Just shut the light for a day. Let it be dark. Yea just think of it as a rainy day. You know they have those. Then put on the light for 6 or 7 hours. Do that for 3-4 days. Then add 1 hour every 3-4 days until you are at 12. And yes you need some snails. Get some Nassarius snails. If you really want to clean up the sand get a golden head goby. But be warned they drop sand all over the rocks and corals.

Yeah I agree try cutting the lights back a bit, and 12hrs of lighting seems a bit much IMO....What type of carbon are you using and how regularly do you change it?

Carbon sounds good IMO......Haven't seen the Black Diamond leach back and I've gone almost 2 months without changing in my lazy days.....I'd cut the light back definitely to get things back under control......Have you checked your RO/DI as well, trying to rule out all possibilites?

You buy your RO/DI water from your store? If you have a handheld TDS meter you could take a reading or next time you get water just inquire about there setup and see if they have a meter or one plumbed to their unit and see what it's reading....On a unit plumbed to the RO/DI unit, you can't get a good reading until the unit has purged old water that has been sitting in the canisters.....This might take 3-4 minutes max....

Total Dissolved Solids. it should be a very small number in a properly working RO/DI machine.

Should be zero coming out of the product line on the RO/DI machine....if not service your unit......They make dual meters that measure the input TDS of your spigot water going in, and then you flip a switch and measure it on the output side.....You should let it run a bit when first turning your water on to the RO/DI unit, since the water sitting in the lines and canister are stale......

It's dead! It was free swimming in your water column thriving off of the extremely red waves of light you were putting into your tank. When you replaced the bulbs, those diatoms died and cover the floor of your tank. They are not appearing, they are dying. Give it a week or so and they will all be gone.
