I have to post a picture looks good i think, but I finally have enough rock I think! lol I had 80lbs or so in my 125 with 55 gal sump. I added 51 more pounds of dead rock bought on the internet and my LFS had a sale on rubble 1 per pound of live rock, premium stuff! So I bought 40 lbs of that and dumped into my first chamber of my sump where most people would put bio balls. Cant way to show you all a picture. I have not yet had water problems and I am soon approaching a year, I would think the addition of more rock would help just that much more right?

Come on now...this is no quiz.
shwstpr88,
Adding dead rock should be cool I would think. As long as it was taken care of properly before it was put in the sump, not dirty, full of dead or decaying particles. Some people even boil their base or dead rocks before putting them in. They will become live eventually.
Was the rubble cured? 40 pounds right?
It may increase your levels a little (ammonia). But I think thats just how it goes. Really adding live rock is super beneficial to a tank. But it can
cause problems.
I don't think you will.

Well my question was a serious one. How does adding rock to a tank and saying "I have not yet had water problems and I am soon approaching a year, I would think the addition of more rock would help just that much more right?" have any benefit?
Additionally I would suggest with that statement adding rock may in fact be detrimental.
Your thoughts?

As long as it is curred rock that has not been out of the water for to long before it goes into the tank it shouldn't have many "detrimental effects". The more live rock you have the greater the biological filter you have which is a positive thing for your tank, correct?

Not necessarily. Your biofilter will grow to the amount it is needed. Extra rock does not mean extra nitrifying bacteria, only extra space for it to inhabit. Your biological filter will grow and die off according to the need for it.
Now on the other side of the coin, by adding the extra rock you have reduced the amount of water volume in the tank. Thereby reducing the ability of the water to dilute the presence accumulated chemicals, metals etc. in the water.

spanko, dude, you crack me up-- "your thoughts?"
i agree with what my man spanko is saying. it could create a spike depending on how it's shipped and how it was cared for. it could also raise the salinity if it's like marcorocks. when the rock dries the water evaporates and the salt remains in the rock.
either way, congratulations on your rock. i'm excited to see the pics of how it turns out for you.

Spanko, buzz kill, etc lol
Anyways yeah the stuff has been cured at the LFS for over a year they have a sale on rubble rock once a year all the tiny pieces in their tank that never get sold basically. So it was out of water oh say 30min tops lol.
Dead rock was boiled sorry should of said that.
So in your theory of adding more rock being bad cause it reduces water volume, why not get rid of all my rock them and just do water changes so all the piss is diluted out that much more? lol
End result, I posted cause of the deal I got, being excited and now have an adequate amount of rock for my tanks of 175 gallons. Ba humbug!
