Adding a Mate?

I recently bought a pair of false percs, but about a week after buying them, one of the clowns went MIA. I've searched everywhere for it so it's a lost cause. I was thinking about buying another false perc for this clown, but do I buy it bigger or smaller than the one I have now? The one I have is fairly small (about 1"-1.25") so I would think it would be hard to find a smaller one. Should I assume that this one is the male and find a larger clown for it?

All I have are 2 mexican turbo snails... I don't have any LR so stuck in a crevice or hitchhiker can't be it... I've taken everything out n looked all over, but no luck. I even looked in my filter to no avail.

Well, I finally came to a conclusion on the missing clown... My guess is that it jumped ship and my dog ate it before I noticed. So now, should I get another false perc for the lonely one in my tank now? It's doing fine, but they seem better in pairs. Also, would having 2 different kinds of clowns in a 46 be a problem? I have a false perc and I was thinking about adding a pair of black and white clowns... Any advice is much welcomed!

if you got another pair yes but you could get just one black and white clown and that will pair up with your orange one and the black ones are the same as false percs just different colors.

cool. Thanks for the tip! Is there any rule of thumb for adding another mate as far as size goes? Should I get it bigger or smaller?

not all blacks are false percs. The occelaris come in black too. Any clown can be all black with the right breeding, its a genetic mutation in alot of cases, and isnt a set "breed" of clown.

All black and white are ocellaris. You should get a fish considerably smaller than the fish you already have, actually the smallest one you can find. That maximizes your chance of getting a male.

Sounds good. I'll wait for mine to grow up a bit so that I can actually find one that's considerably smaller than him. Thanks for the replies!

if your clown is a baby it shouldnt matter when adding a mate because they are both still juveniles.
how big is your clown? If he is the smaller kind like most lfs sell, it wont matter if you add another clown... for now. If you wait until he gets bigger and the --- charecteristics come into play, then you may have a problem.
I would add the new fish to the tank and leave the lights off until the next day. Just to give the new guy some time to acclimate to the new territory before he meets his new room mate
Good Luck

If you buy one of the smallest fish from a community tank w/many you can be sure you have a male and just add it now. If the one you already have is female fine, if it is male, the dominant one will turn female.
Pretty easy IMO?
