Welcome to the site! There is no such thing as a stupid question.
You ONLY add chemical IF your test results indicate you should, NEVER DOSE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE NOT TESTED FOR. It won't matter if it's a reef tank or fish only. You should also have live rock besides sand in the tank.
I see lots of folks go to the LFS and purchase a bunch of crap they don't need. Too much iodine will poison the tank, for example. Instead of loading your tank up with chemicals, do regular water changes to replenish trace elements.
