can a small piece of uncured LR be added to a estblished tank without causing a dramatic change?

yes, if you use well cured lr(buy it locally or cure it before adding,if it is MOed), it would definitely be ok
IMO but uncured lr only use pieces under 2 lbs (om 125, maybe 3 or 4 lbs), but no more

I have done it with 5 and 6 pound pieces without any problems.

I have added 3-4 lbs with no problem....

depends on the size of your tank, skimmer, filtration, and how established it is; usually adding up 5 lbs at a time is ok;preferably put it into a q tank w/ water from main tank; that way you can observe the LR and most of die off would occur in q tank instead; but if buying from LFS you can quickly get it home before that becomes a problem anyways
