Adding LR

Hello all. I have a question on adding LR. I finally got my tank up and running, When I add the LR do I add it all at once? I have 45lbs to add. There is nothing live in my tank, just to let you all know.

Oh yeah...I was going to cycle it in the tank also.

Is the tank cycled. If it isnt cycled ur good. If its cycled then you ned to make sure the rock is cured.

yup... put it all in... this will most likey start you cycle too... you can add a little flake food every other or 3rd day for the first week to get it started as wll...

Add it all at once. If you already cycled your tank, you will most likely see a spike in levels. If not, then the LR should kickstart your cycle by spiking your ammonia.

if there isnt any live stock it doesnt need to be cured...

ok....what would happen if the rock is already cured, just out of curiosity?

I dont think it would do anything. I think that you would need to let some die off happen?

but he also stated there wasnt livestock in the tank... so whats the point of curing it out of the tank??? even if it had already been cycled and there wasnt plans to add live stock for a couple days he could still just cure it in his display tank...

nothing... add some flake to get it going... or a coctail shrimp...

But it would take longer than a couple of days. Curing takes weeks. He could of cycled with shrimp.

curing does not take weeks... it varies just like the length of a cycle...

It takes a while. If it varies like cycles .. Cycles take Weeks 4-6 to finish. I think that it wouldnt take 2 days for levels to be fine.

So just to get this straight for myself. I do not have any live stock so I can cure the LR in my DT. Just add all the rock and a shrimp, wait for the levels to spike, remove the shrimp. And that is the start of the cycle. When all the levels stabilize thats the end of the cycle? Should I wait to postion the LR untill after the cycle is complete?

Sounds like youve got it down. Unless your adding CURED rock(takes a while to cure) then you should just make it how you want it now. Unless your addin more rock soon.
