Adding water to tank

Hi,
What type of water should be used to "top off" a tank between normal water changes. I have been using fresh water for this (about .5 to 1 gallons).......I do not have any inhabitants yet except LR.
If this is the correct way, do you keep both a source for pre-heated fresh water and also a source for your saltwater used in the water changes?

If your tank is going down by evaperating then you just use freshwater I dont heat mine I just get it to feel about the same as the water in my tank. If you are taking water out for a water change then you are taking salt with it so you have to replace with saltwater you have to heat this to get it to the right temp and the heat will help dissolve the salt you also have to circulate it! Just remeber salt dont evaporate so fresh water for evaperation salt for water change.

I've herad you are suppose to use distilled water to add to the tank where water has evop[ated but i am a beginner

Yes use Distilled or RO Water
