Adjusting Durso Air Hole

I made a durso stand pipe like on the web site and drilled a hole in the side ot the top cap for adjusting the air. The pipe works great and is very quite as long as the hole is not compleatly closed.
If I compleatly close the hole the the water level in the box drops to below the L and starts gurrgleling so I slowly open the hole and the water level begins to bounce up and down to the top of the L down to halve way down the L but not lower than the L and is QUITE.
Is this where it should be ??????? Bouncing ????
If I open it all the way, OR even remove the cap, then the water level comes up "almost over the top of the L " and stays there but is also QUITE , not as quite with the cap removed ofcourse and I would not leave it off but to test that the hole is not too small... Should I leave the hole all the way open ????
Where should I adjust the water level to ?????

I don't use Durso pipes I use Stockman, same principle...I like to have the water right up to the bottom of the teeth in the overflow, maybe a little lower.
You can try two things that I can think of
1) drill the hole a little bigger till you get the level where you want it and it stays there.
2) add a small gateball valve to the cap.. I did this a while back, it adjusted very well but for some reason made a sucking noise that I couldn't get rid of.
