What are the advantages of a protien skimmer? We have a problem with our nitrates. It seems they never go below 20. And thats right after the water change. After a day or so it goes right to 40. I am worried it is stressing out my fish and thats why we are having so much trouble with ick. Does a protien skimmer help with this?????

A protein skimmer will help to remove organics before they have a chance to breakdown into ammonia then nitrite then nitrates. It will also help to aerate the water increasing oxygen and driving out CO2.
That sadi 20 ppm is not a bad level of nitrate, especially in a fish only tank. Of course if you have a reef tank you want to continuously drive that number towards zero. Your fish being stressed is definitely a cause for concern. Makes them more susceptible to the parasite if it is exists in the tank. However if the parasite is in the tank you have to take steps to removekill it off. This is done by leaving the tank fallow for at least 6 weeks, 8 is better. That will interrupt the life cycle of the parasite and cause it's erradication. Of course then to ensure you don't introduce it again, anything with the exception of your own newly mixed saltwater, must be quarantined for that 6 to 8 week period.

I will be going out to get a protien skimmer this weekend. My stocklist is
1 dogfaced puffer,
1 v lion,
3 anthia, (only temperary as lion is only a baby)
and 1 sea goblin
The tank is a 90gal with a 30 gal sump.
No corals and only a few cuc of snails and hermits.
Today we went out and got some miracle mud at the advise of our lfs and in a few days after it settles in we will be getting the plants to go in it. Micro algea i think. What do you think? I will be asking opinions on miracle mud in another thread as well.

Oh feeding schedual is 2-3 meals for anthia's and 1-2 a day for puffer. 1 every 2 days for lion and sea goblin because they are baby's and food is bigger.
