My 30 gallon SW (wanna be reef) up and running about 4 months now. Help everyone, advise and criteque please.
here's what I have, hope I didn't forget anything.
DIY hood with
Two 20 watt fluorescents
Two 40 watt hi lights
Two 60 watt hi lights
2 cooling fans
Penguin bio wheel filter 125
AquaClear multifunctional Powerhead 301
Rio powerhead 600
Via therm 100 heater
thermometer (temp 82 degrees)
Protein skimmer (DIY that my lfs helped me set up)
2” sand bed (40 lbs) SHOULD I ADD MORE ?
25 lbs lr
My livestock:
10 blue leg crabs
10 astrea snails
1 cucumber
2 emerald crabs
5 sand sifting crabs
2 peppermint shrimp (doing good job keeping aiptasia under control)
1 cleaner shrimp
1 pencil urchin
Condylactis anemone & anemone crab
Long tentacle anemone
2 tomato clowns (the larger one host the long tentacle, and chases the little one away, but it gets up under the anemone where she is not noticed and gets her fair share of attention.
:jumping: :D
One of our smaller LR has small bunch of pulsating xenia’s and
A couple of purple mushrooms
Had one hermit crab (Hermie) which was getting two big and eating my smaller crabs and snails
Had one small white unknown crab (whitie) which must have come with lr and he was terrorizing everything in the tank. My lfs said EVICT !!! My husband evicted them tonight, while I was at work, I just didn’t have the heart to do it.

use ro water with instant ocean for water changes
use plain ro water to top off evaporation
Using saltwater master test kit
PH 8.0
Amonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrates 20
What else should I be testing for ?
should I be adding any supplements ?
any suggestions on what to get next to add, I don't want too many fish, but would like to add 1 or two more if possible, any suggestions ?
:help: :notsure:

My husband made my cabinet, hood and set up the lights in the hood. I have the lights on timers to stay on 12 hours each. first set comes on about 9am, the second set comes on at 10am. (wasn't too sure if I needed to stagger the times like that) night lights come on at 10pm and go off at 8am.

Looks like you are off to a good start. Lighting intensity is good and should allow you some growing room. I'd also consider testing for Alk (aka: KH) and Calcium as well as PH, those are some of the more important measurements for after the cycle. For a great breakdown of the Alk/Ca/Ph relationship check the reef forum sticky 'informational threads'.
I wouldn't add anymore sand IMO bare bottom is the way to go, minimal sand is ok for looks :)
Cheers and best of luck!

I would agree on the sand. In my limited experience and hear-say that I have heard, I would stay where you're at. I'm running at 1.5"-2" deep and it is fine. The brown thing (imo) looks like some kind of urchin but I am probably wrong.

Misty,
great start!
The pinkish stuff is coraline, the purple stuff...I can't tell. Coraline comes in many color variations, some darker, some pinker, but it could also be a thin layer of non-coraline red algea (which is what I think it is). if you gently brush it with an old tooth brauch, the coraline would stay on the rock, and the alges would probably come off...so you can try that if you are bored!
Suggestions - I would add more rock as it will offer additional bioloigical filtration for your tank and that can only help the long term health of your tank.
I do not think that is an urchin, nor do I think it is some form of macro-algae, although from the photo I can't tell what it is. Could be a small anemone of some descrition (aptasia? mohano? perhaps a hitchiking bubble tip or something?), or perhaps a little patch of some form of polyps. Just keep you eye on it, and if you can get better pics, then post them.
Good luch.
