I have to switch tanks tomorrow due to the one is leaking. I have everything together but the ? is when i move the sand to the new tank and since im disturbing the whole bed how bad will my trates spike, will it be enough to worry about. And to make things worse woke up this morning to find one of my jawfish on the floor dead, they were a mated pair. He or she even pulled it off w/ the egg crate on top. Thanks for any input.

I would move it as carefully as possible so as not to stir it too much. You are going to get a spike, and I would have some water made up to do a water change if it is neccessary. Move it in nets as gently and carefully as possible.

Be prepared for a spike. Expect it to happen. That way, you are already ready to do a water change or two. Then, if a spike does not happen, you will be able to relax. When I switched my tank over, I got no spike at all. I was 100% ready to handle the spike if it was going to happen, though.

I moved the contents of 4 separate tanks (a 6, a 12 and 2 55 gallons) into a 90 taking the sand of the 6. 12 and one 55 and mixing them together. I did have a rise in nitrates nut not in ammonium or nitrite which surprised me . Also the nitrate increase was by no way as big as could be and was not at a dangerous level (ok any amount is dangerous but you know what I mean). I did have a bad case of the brown sand that got bad and then got better. Now it is completely gone with out anything used. I just have a fair amount of Nassarius snails.
I put in the vase rock first so that there were stable. When I moved it I got a plastic cup scooped it up and put it in a bucket. I took the bucket to the new tank and turned it over.
What I was surprised with was how long it took for the sand to settle. So be prepared to hold your fish and corals for 24-48 hours in buckets with heaters and power heads.
Last word of advise make a check list of your fish. and keep an eye on them. I lost my gloden head goby...and I mean lost. I have no idea where he went. I looked everywhere. Poof gone.
Also just cuz I did not get a spike does not mean you wont. Have some water ready for changes.

switching tanks... god what a nightmare. have done this and its not fun. one word of advice, when you move your sand mix up a bucket of salt water and scoop out your sand in a net then rinse it in the bucket of water to wash out some of the gunk you may lose some of your sand bed critters into the bucket but you can retrieve lots of them later with a shrimp net, this helps get rid of some of the detritus that has been building up in your sand bed. will will get a spike still but this will help to minimize it. and like said above get ready for some water changes. hope this helps.

The sand took a day to settle. Then I added the rocks and that stirred everything up. The fish were in buckets almost 3 days.

Okay I have moved tanks and reset new tanks from old a bunch!
On moving day have three times as many five gallon buckets as you think you need. Have twice the volume of water mixed in anvance as the system will hold. Have new system totally ready (freshwater tested / level / I mean ready!) begin with filling a few buckets with some tank water and then place corals/sesile inverts in these, top them off with "some" premixed new water.
Once your sesiles have all been removed "carefully" begin removing all live rock - watch for hitch hikers! fill live rock water with some existing tank water and again "some" new mix water. Now fill a bucket about half full of water by siphoning off top of water column in tank. Start catching fish and put in that bucket (keep a lid on it!!!!!!!!!!!!) trust me on that. Now let the tank clear as much as you can and fill another bucket half way - now get the mobile inverts in there. Once this is done siphon off as much water as you can and save it. Now start ladling sand into a bucket and don't fill it more than half full (it will be heavy enough at half full!) - pour enough water that you siphoned off to just cover the sand - put a lid on it and repeat till all sand is removed. Now get everything to new location or simply start filling new tank with sand (put some eggcate down first and rock will never settle to glass!) - Base now down so begin rock work filling with as much saved water as needed to cover rock as you build up. Once rock is all up fill to allow operation of sump / filters / etc. Borrow a hotmag or other pilisher to clear water - once cleared add corals and other sessile inverts. Due a partial water change with premixed water - now add mobile inverts. Next add the fish. Now as long as lighting, filter/sump, skimmer, and all are working do another partial water change with any remaining pre mixed water.
Now clean up! Make as much salt water up as it would take to change system over (100 gallon system = make 100 gallons) - Next day change 10% water, next 10%, so on and so on until after 10 days you have completely used all your water up. During process feed every other day "sparingly" and monitor your parameters - because water was changes while resetting tank and after you shouldn't see a major spike maybe only a bump.
I have reset and or moved close to 30 systems this way.
Good luck and hope this helps.
