If you have glass tops, remove them. Tops of any kind... you should purchase a canopy instead of the tops. Standard 55g aquarium canopies are relatively cheap.
Also, Pointing a powerhead across the surface of the water will help gas exchange more than if you point a powerhead up at the water.
Test your pH later in the day - about an hour before lights out. 7.8 is typically what pH usually is at just before the lights come on,... under most circumstances.

Alright, since you have a light that doesn't have to sit on the glass, I highly recommend that you completely remove the glass tops. Then, take on of your powerheads and let it blow water across the surface of the water. This will greatly increase aeration. Instead of having the powerhead blowing up at the water.
Also, if your skimmer isn't pulling out any gunk over the course of a few days, the skimmer is doing nothing for your tank. I highly recommend that you upgrade your skimmer and add a canopy.
Nothing wrong with working for money. An allowance goes a long way if you can do chores around the house. Cutting grass in the Summer also helps add a little cash in your pocket. I wouldn't completely count on your parents for everything - so if you can, try putting yourself to good use. ;)

I never said anything about havig to buy a light. You take the feet off of the light you have and secure it inside a canopy. A canopy for a 55g tank van cost anywhere from $25-50 if you build one yourself.
If you cant do anything that i have suggested, i would start looking for a new hobby. Preferably one that your father may let you actually enjoy.
Oh, and since you want a reef, you will have to increase your lighting anyway. Ad long as the pH isnt hurtin your current fish, keep it a fish only tank until your old enough to actually enjoy your hobby.
