so, hears the deal. i have a 75 with a yellow tang, naso tang, flame angel, and marroon clown. i will soon be upgrading to a 150. I am not sure what to put in the 75 after the move. i was thinking of a simple lion and eel ..but are there any other options i have?
i dont want the classic FOWLR because thats what will be on the 150.
thanks in advance.

75 is way to big for a mantis tank . You would loose a mantis in that big of a tank . A tank half that size is more suited for a mantis tank .

do a couple lions and an eel. if you do this, I strongly suggest not getting two volitans unless you decide on putting them in the 150 ( antenneta, radiata, fu manchu, or any dwarf species is perfect for a 75), a 75 is big enouph for one volitan, but not two for long. also it is better to introduce two lions into a tank at the same time, lions can be very terratorial towards eachother if they're isn't ample room for hideing durring the day. as far as eels go, leopard eel, snowflake eel, and even a chainlink are good candidates for a 75 gal species tank (they're are more, but they cost anywhere between $400-$2000 and require an expert keeper as do sharks and rays, which bring up another bad recomendation that your lfs will probibly tell you).
most lf's with say you can put small sharks and rays ie bamboo sharks, california stingray in a 75 and they will only grow as large as they're enviroment lets them, NO thats wrong the shark will end up getting seasures and deformed limbs, and it will tragically end in death. so unless your going to get a 180 gal (which i think is still too small) i would stay away from sharks and rays.
good luck,
Jake

90% of volitans get to 12''-13''...if there isn't a lot of rockwork in the tank you will be fine. im going off of recomendations from scott michael. unless your planning on spending 2-300$ on a lionfish ie african black, a 75 is a perfect tank size.

i've seen a couple volitans that have easily outgrown their 90 gallon tanks. most should get to over a foot in a little over a year.

im not saying they wont, but i am saying your avg volitan (tank raised) wont get over 14''. if there isn't a lot rockwork in the tank you should be fine. again this is comming from a highly respected marine biologist and a owner of swf store. i personally have never owned one, but i do know many that have and have kept them in a 75gal for over 10 yrs. im not looking in my books right now, but i believe scott micheals says a volitan lion can be kept in a 55 gal aquarium at min. volitans do not swim around that much, theyre not that active. its just like sharks, bamboo sharks can be raised in 180gal tanks due to they are not that active, now you cant throw a epaulette shark (about the same size at max) in a 180 and expect it to live to its full life span becuase, it is a more active shark. it needs atleast a 260 gal.
im just telling you guys what ive researched.

Personally I'd get an octopus... If you're willing to give it the specialized care that they require.

Before I had much experience I had a Volitan in a 75. The fish got to about 9 inches in a little over a year. Even at this size it was obvious that it was too big in the 75. Its fins almost touched the glass in front and back when it was fully extended. I'd say that was too big and it wasnt anywhere near full grown yet!

im just going off of what ive read and what ive been told for 7 years. if you believe different than go get into marine biology and write a couple books to further inform myself and other hobbyist.
