Agressive Yellow Tang??

Hi, I am not very experienced with Saltwater fish just yet, but I think they are awesome. I have a 55 gal aquarium with about 60 lbs of live rock. The tank has been going about 1 year now. My live rock has tons of feather dusters and cool things on it..... tank seems VERY healthy. I guess my question is about my yellow tangs. I have two of them that I purchased from the same tank on the same day about 6 months ago. They got along great and were a hoot to watch dart around the rocks. In the last few days though, one of the tangs is not letting the other one come out from the rocks, not even to eat. Every time it comes out it gets chased back in. Why are my tangs not getting along? The only other fish in there are a domino damsel, a marroon clown and about 6 blue leg hermits. Are they crowded or something? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I do not have another tank to seperate them, so that is not an option. Thanks in advance for your help!

Well the recomendation for tangs is that you get 1 or more than 2. They will start butting heads like they are now the thing to do would be to return one before it dies. One has obviously staked his ground and is the dominent one. You'll also hear that tangs should not be in tanks smaller than 125g they need the room to swim. JMO :happyfish

You should not put 2 tangs in the same tank They recommend you get 1 or 3 or more. They eventually start picking on each other like your's are. So I would recommend you moving one to another tank if you have one or returning it for store credit. Before it dies of starvation or gets killed. JMO :happyfish

Two Tangs in a 55 gallon aquarium???
You should have a 75 gallon tank for one tang, so there is adequate real estate for swimming.
Also, 3 in a larger tank is okay - but not 2 otherwise someone is going to get picked on. That is what you are dealing with now.

So do I need to get rid of my tangs all together? The store where I got them said that two should be fine together in my 55 gal. Guess I need to do more research and not just listen to what the store says. Thanks for your help so far.

They are both obviously small. IMO you need to relocate both of them. The "Tang Police" will throw a fit. Ha! Tangs are stuergon family and needs lots of room to swim. As stated above, a 75 for 1 (IMO thats pushing it too). Tangs need a minimum of 6 FEET of swimming room. They will get stressed out and since Tangs are usually ICH magnets (not really) just seems they get sicker quicker will lead to more headaches than needed. All my fish are in QT right now cause I did not listen to ppl on here and put a yellow in my 55. Done real well for 2 months and then stressed big time, came down with ich, infected my whole tank, died and now I have 4 fish in QT waiting to get better and my maintank to run fallow (fishless) for 3-4 weeks.

This is my take on your question.
There is not enough real estate in a 55 gallon aquarium for 2 tangs, period, end of story. You really need at minimum a 75 gallon tank for a tang. Period. End of story.
My LFS owner is a small business owner and guess what. He's a great guy who knows fish and knows corals. He has also taught me a lot. But he is in a BUSINESS
and businesses need money to stay open.
I listen to my LFS owner, but I also research everything out I possibly can when it comes to picking out fish because I'm the one signing the credit card or writing the check, not him. After all, he is TAKING the money I earned and I need to know I am making a wise financial purchase too.
When I first got my snowflake eel, I wanted to buy shrimp for my tank. My LFS owner told me not to because snowflake eels will consider the shrimp his next meal. So, I went home and researched the eel and found out he is was right. They are prone to making shimp a meal, so I didn't buy the shrimp the next time I went in and he asked me about it.
Then I bought a second tank... and started stocking it with other things I liked including shrimp. He got his shrimp sale out of me eventually, but not on that very day. He knows a lot but doesn't know everything and I can't cry to him about my own mistakes because I should research things on my own and get another opinion. Believe me, you'll get lots of opinions and others even told me that my snowflake eel might not eat a shimp. But considering I was told there could be a problem and my research on other sites mentioned it as well I decided I better not.
By no means am I one of the tang police. I'm just telling you the saltwater facts here. Personally, if you want to keep the tangs, start shopping for a bigger tank and start setting it up. The tangs will get stressed out, more than likely will wind up with ich or some kind of problem and they will die.
If you don't want to tank shop or do another tank, maybe your LFS will give you store credit and allow you to return them. There are many, many kinds of fish that can be kept in a 55 gallon aquarium. Just make sure you have adequate real estate for everyone to be happy and you have fish that can get a long with each other and you'll be okay.
We all have to learn and make our fair share of mistakes a long the way before we can consider ourselves more than a beginner at this hobby.

Hi, I just wanted to update anyone who cares about my tang problem.... My local lfs said they would take one of my tangs. I tried for 30 mins to catch the darn thing, but I have lots of live rock and coral and hundreds of tiny feather dusters, so needless to say, no catch. I know for a fact that I will not be able to try again. My family is worried about upsetting all the cool little stuff in the tank or stressing the other fish too much. So now what? I put everything back in place, put in some stress coat and left the light off. I guess the tangs are going to have to battle it out. I can't catch them and I didn't know I couldn't have two. I feel like an awful fish owner.
Thanks for listening.

try using your algae scraper to push him where you want him, which will be towards the top in a corner near the front, its worked for me, tangs are smart you need to fool them well...
that way you the scraper pushing him towards where you have the net placed...
